Hey there!

I'm packing up the studio in Oxford this week... Boy do I have a lot of stuff!  My husband has another name for it. :)

"Teal and Golden Bouquet"
7 x 5
Acrylic on batik fabric

Like last weeks painting... this is another small "warm-up"... I was experimenting with a different color palette... (limited to yellow, turquoise and brown)

I usually enjoy playing around with titles... But really sort of drew a blank with this one.... obviously. ;)

Idea Spark-lers
Are you in need of some painting ideas to get you going? Well, you've come to the right place!

Paint on top of printed fabric....

"Bouquet on Bugs"~  sold~ (thanks Meg)
Bouquet on Bug Fabric

My mom was a terrific quilter...Have you ever been in a quilt shop? Oh my! Be still my heart!!! The most glorious array of fabric arranged in color spectrum style. It almost makes me drool and definitely gets my heart pounding.

All that beautiful fabric sitting around got me thinking... What would happen if I painted on top of the patterned fabric?

So, here's your idea sparkler for the week... take a small piece of fabric the same size as the watercolor paper. Any smooth sort of fabric will do...any color, any pattern.

No fabric available? You could cut a piece from an old shirt! (5 x 7 is an easy size to begin with.) I glue the fabric to the paper with gloss or matte medium. Then I coat the top with another layer of medium, just so the paint will slide across the fabric a bit easier. Don't worry if the paper and fabric are not the exact same size... a little fabric or paper overhang can be covered up with a mat. I prepare a few at a time... So I always have a special "fabric" support ready to play around with.

The fabric "under-painting" unites your work in interesting ways, peeking through here and there.

So... go ahead, cut up those old clothes or better yet, visit a quilt shop and buy the small "fat quarters" of fabric. A quilt shop visit might be a great idea for your next "artist's date."

Have fun... and drop me a line if you try it!
