Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

In August 2008, ASAP East began participating in an exciting training program designed to help us better serve our children and families: Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  This training opportunity is available through a learning collaborative coordinated by the Center of Excellence. ASAP East sent a core group of our clinicians to take part in this ongoing training opportunity, which includes 6 days of intensive training; monthly consultation calls; and tools for program self-assessment, evaluation, and proficiency in order to continue and provide instruction in this treatment model to the rest of the ASAP team.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) is an evidence-based treatment for children who have experienced a range of traumatic events. It integrates trauma sensitive interventions with cognitive-behavioral strategies.  Like all of ASAP's services, TFCBT is a family-focused approach with a strong emphasis on caregiver involvement.  The treatment is structured and time limited (12-20 sessions), is focused on skill building, and involves direct discussion and processing of the abuse experience.  It is effective for use with children between the ages of 3 and 18.

Psycho-education, parenting skills, relaxation, identification of feelings, cognitive coping, exploration and processing of abuse experiences, personal safety, and enhancement of social skills are among the many components addressed within the TFCBT treatment model.

ASAP East is looking forward to the further training and development of our regional team.  Furthermore, in April, 2009, the entire statewide ASAP staff will receive a full day of training with Tripp Ake, PhD, one of the senior trainers with the TFCBT collaborative.

"For children placed in foster care, this type of loss tends to happen over and over again, and is incredibly hard to process. To help children better manage these repeated traumas, foster and adoptive parents, as well as child welfare workers, must be sensitive to the role ambiguous loss plays in foster and adopted children's behavior."
