News to Move You  Winter 2011

Two "Women Outside" circa 1999

We hope this communiqué finds you poised for spring.

We've certainly been enjoying the outdoors this winter, yet there is unmatched optimism in spring's ability to make all things new. Dylan Thomas's proverbial "force that through the green fuse drives the flower" holds a power like no other.

If you share our appreciation for the natural world and its wild possibilities, you may enjoy reading Women Outside: Conversations about Nature, Art & Spirit, a collection of interviews by poet and writer Mary Olmsted Greene, featuring the diverse perspectives of 13 women from the Upper Delaware Region, including, you guessed it -- us. Sandy's photography graces the book's covers.

Readers will also meet a nine-year-old walking a streambed and an 80-year-old living alone in the woods. Other interviewees include a wildlife rehabilitator, shorthorn shepherd, Sufi master, Yoruba priestess, dancer, photographer, activist, gardener, naturalist and mountaineer. Their words are echoed in poems that examine the book's four sections: Earth's Daughters, Crossing Paths, Body Knowledge and Answering the Call.

What better way to bid adieu to winter than to invite these wild women into your library?

Keep to it!

A website for working forest and farm lands
Cyber Sustainability

We're delighted to share news about the recent launch of the Shop Local Save Land website, an interactive portal connecting consumers to local farm and forest products in order to support working lands.

The website and associated print guides are a joint venture between Heron's Eye Communications and WDesign, developed in association with the Delaware Highlands Conservancy. The online resource includes a searchable and expandable database of farm and forest providers, an events calendar, resource articles, photos, videos, tours and a Fresh from the Land blog.

The Shop Local Save Land initiative will be presented to the PA land trust community later this spring during the 9th annual Pennsylvania Land Conservation Conference in Harrisburg May 19 to 21.

The new website will be highlighted as a promotional and educational tool for land trusts and landowners during the workshop Forests and Farms - Agroforestry in Working Landscapes, co-presented by Tracey Coulter of DCNR Bureau of Forestry, Eric Burkhart of Penn State University, and Krista.

We hope you'll visit the site often and share it with friends and colleagues who support working lands.

A Quarter Century of Service

Congratulations to our friends at Clemleddy Construction, who celebrate the company's 25th birthday this year!

Back in 1986 when Owner and President Craig Smyth started the business, he took inspiration from his Great Grandfather -- Clement Leddy -- the company's namesake. "As we enter our next quarter century, we remain wholeheartedly committed to Clem's unwavering sense of duty, honesty and morality that form this company's foundation," says Smyth. "Designing, building and renovating beautiful and comfortable living spaces is what we love to do, and nothing makes us happier than seeing our customers satisfied with the results of our work."

Heron's Eye Communications is proud to partner with The Clemleddy Team in achieving their marketing goals!

1,000 pounds of PA butter

The 95th annual PA Farm Show featured a seemingly endless array of the state's finest agriculture-based products, exhibits, fabulous food and activities for all ages. Heron's Eye Communications stopped by the historic event, which transpired in eleven buildings covering 24 acres, and featuring 6,000 animals.

A centerpiece of the 2011 show was the 1,000-pound butter sculpture, the fantastic creation of artist Jim Victor of Conshohocken. Post-show, all that PA butter was to be converted into biodiesel. View other Farm Show highlights HERE.

Kristy and Rowan
Meet Kristy Boki and her mastiff, Rowan. We recently had our dog, Bu, treated with reiki by this skilled practitioner from the Honesdale, PA area.

Kristy is a reiki master teacher who worked for 6 years at Dessin Animal Shelter where she delivered this alternative healing practice along with others like acupressure, as well as dog obedience training. Kristy also offers classes in animal reiki and dog obedience training.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique promoting self healing. In combination with acupressure, it can help to restore emotional, physical and spiritual balance, and is complementary to other medicinal and holistic treatments.

Kristy is also an excellent photographer specializing in animal portraits and collages. Keep her in mind to assist your animal companions or to provide you with a memorable portrait.

Following the success of her Valentine's Day animal portrait session, Kristy will hold an Easter session near Honesdale on April 10.

Learn more and read Kristy's blog at Scar's Healing, named in honor of Scar, an old Chocolate Lab and sweet soul with a prominent scar on his head.
