Hi
"Weir" back... with photos and fanciful tales of recent excursions. The most exciting of which was our late-September trip to Jim Fredericks' eel weir on the Upper Delaware River.
We happily donned some fetching neoprene bibs and headed out on the water for an up-close tour.
After sloshing around the rock walls and wooden rack that Jim and his girlfriend Sandy build and tend by hand each year, we headed back to "camp" for a can of light beer and a chat about what motivates this man to continue the age-old practice of eeling.
From what we learned, it certainly requires a lot of muscle, a keen sense of fashion and an occasional cocktail. Want more of the story? Watch the video HERE.
Keep to it!

Ride On!
"Harvest the Power" was the theme at this year's Pennsylvania Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Festival in Kempton, PA.
Everyone attending this celebration of earth-friendly living--including Heron's Eye Communications--harvested the expertise of 100 speakers and 150 exhibitors focused on organic farming, green building, alternative transportation and much more. Great music (Paul Winter) and healthy food round out this informative annual festival, which incorporates kids' programs, environmental films, a farmer's market and demos ranging from biodiesel to hybrid cars. CLICK HERE to view some photos of the festival, including a few of our favorite peddle pusher Bob the Bike Guy. |
Show Us the Power
Heron's Eye Communications found some fascinating and fun stuff at the annual Howetown Farm Show in Sterling, PA. The free annual event, held on the last weekend of September, provides a compelling glimpse of bygone days and a close-up glance at the devices that powered progress. Now in its 15th year, the show features demonstrations of threshing machines, steam engines, hit and miss motors, antique tractors, a two-horse treadmill, a dog treadmill and more. Farm animals, hay rides and home-made ice cream sweeten the experience. CLICK HERE to view photos of this living history lesson. |
Simply Juan-derful!
Much deserved congratulations to our good friend Juan Espino, whose artwork will be a part of The Museum of International Naive Art's 2010 exhibition. The museum is located in Magog, Quebec, Canada, and is the largest showcase for naive art, representing more than 300 artists from 30+ countries. The 2010 exhibit takes place from July 17 to September 19. Readers may be familiar with Juan's exquisitely detailed paintings of the architecture of downtown Hawley and Milford, his annual Hawley Winterfest posters and collectible ornaments, or his tireless support of local artists through his gallery--The Looking Glass Art Gallery--on Hawley's Main Avenue. Juan and his wife Millie were some of the first local residents to welcome us to Pike County. The Looking Glass hosted our April 2000 exhibition Transcending Perceptions: Vision and Verse, featuring paintings, poetry and performance. The show included a painting titled Heron's Eye, the namesake of our company. |
Legendary Lakewood Park
Heron's Eye Communications is honored to have helped history buffs and readers alike to recapture their magical summer memories by contributing volunteer editorial services to the Arcadia Publishing Images of America book: Lakewood Park. The project was spearheaded by Peg Grigalonis, whose family established Lakewood Park in 1916 in Barnesville, PA--Schuylkill County. Lakewood Park became known as a nature retreat for anthracite miners and their families, and it developed into the destination for swimming, picnicking, amusement rides, skating, dances, boxing matches, ethnic celebrations, summer stock plays, and political banquets. Many of the biggest names of the big band era entertained audiences at Lakewood's grand ballroom. Sales of the Lakewood Park book benefit the Mahanoy City Free Public Library. Get your copy through Arcadia Publishing or Amazon or by calling the Library at 570-773-1610. | |

Farewell, Friend
We extend our deepest sympathy to our good friends at the Delaware Valley Raptor Center in Milford, PA, on the loss of their dear and dependable, Miles, a barred owl who accompanied Bill Streeter to countless educational programs over many years. "Our program birds are our family," says Bill. "They are our best friends." Please consider becoming a member to support the DVRC's important work. |
