Christine Newman

Christine Newman Christine Newman has been an extraordinary part of making Girls Inc. DC Metro a leader in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) for girls in the Washington, DC area.  Christine, the Assistant Dean for Engineering Education Outreach for Johns Hopkins University, is driven to ensure that all girls have the tools and resources to pursue careers in STEM.  With
Christine's investment and support we have exposed girls to experiences in
environments like Cisco, NASA, and university physics labs.

We thank Christine for her dedication to Girls Inc. DC Metro!  Her leadership has and will continue to make a difference in the lives of many girls across Washington, DC!

My Challenge, My Choice!
Childhood obesity and wellness are issues that everyone is paying attention to these days.  Our own First Lady, Michelle Obama, has shown a deep interest in making sure that we are equipping children with the right tools to make healthy eating decisions.

With partnerships and funding from the Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural and Minority Medicine (IAMMM) and the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust, Girls Inc DC Metro has developed a program, My Challenge, My Choice! to promote the sustainability of health and fitness for the girls in the District of Columbia.   This health and wellness program teaches girls that good health is a life-long goal that begins with making the small but critical steps that will lessen the chances of childhood obesity and health problems in the future. The program is currently offered to middle school girls at two locations- the Fort Davis Community Center in Ward 7 and Webb- Wheatley MS. Ward 5.

Juice

Thursdays are designated cooking days. The girls learn to make healthy snacks and eat a balanced diet. While cooking, girls discuss different food groups and how to make healthy snacks on a budget. We expect that the lessons learned will carry the girls throughout their lives and better equip them to lead healthier lives.

In addition, the girls at Fort Davis began tilling the soil to establish the Girls Inc. community garden. After pulling up the overgrown plants and weeds they researched what plants would grow with success in the DC climate.

Along with promoting a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet and fresh produce, "My Challenge My Choice" encourages the girls to be active and have fun while exercising.

Double Dutch Picture

Thirty minutes of exercise is designated every day to get the girls moving through fun games such as tag, double dutch, relay races, scavenger hunts, and basketball. The girls are encouraged to participate in sports and to sign up for local sports leagues. The girls have also set individual health goals and identified steps they will take to reach their goals. Through these steps, Girls Inc. DC Metro teaches the girls how to sustain a healthy lifestyle, and teaches them that these small steps are attainable and can also be fun!

Junior Bison Bots Robotics Team!
This past fall Girls Inc. DC Metro proudly announced our first Robotics team, The Junior Bison Bots in partnership with the Howard University Middle School of Math and Science. Since our last update the girls have competed in their FIRST Lego League Competition.  Not only were they the ONLY all female team represented, but they also won the Teamwork Award!  The girls met five days a week to research, build, and program their robot for the competition.
In addition, this year's challenge included addressing a transportation issue in their community. This team of leaders decided to improve transportation for children in wheelchairs.
Outstanding!
