Dear Friends,

We had an exciting summer here at Girls Inc. of the Washington, DC Metro Area and the fall has been off to an equally busy start!

Several of our unique programs are highlighted below.

Our transition to a new after school center on the Howard University campus is nearly complete! Here we will have a safe space for the girls and an opportunity to develop a model University- Girls Inc. affiliate, bringing to girls all of the exciting possibilities that a vibrant college campus can bring.

We just held our 3rd Annual Strong, Smart, and Bold Gala at the Bethesda Country Club.  Thanks to our generous supporters, the evening was a great success! All proceeds will go toward enhancing our programs and will enable us to begin an after school schedule at the Girls Inc. at Howard University Center!

Enjoy the newsletter, and especially the delightful photos of the strong, smart and bold young ladies you help us to serve every day!

With deep appreciation,
All of us at Girls Inc. WDCMA

NOT your ordinary summer in the city!

Thanks to our funders for a GREAT summer of leadership, learning, making new friends, stretching our own limits and recognizing that we can accomplish whatever we set our minds to!

Adventure Girls!!!
... a summer leadership program for team building, peer support, individual skill building, personal "stretching" and goal setting at the Trinidad Recreation Center, NE DC.
more trail hiking
Adventure Girls recognizes physical challenges like hiking and rock climbing as metaphors for other challenges in life and believes in  personal growth through such experiences. These Adventure Girls went outside their comfort zones, created their own definitions of success, and learned to reflect on and appreciate who they are and who they are becoming. By challenging themselves in new ways, many girls even earned their sailing certification!

Living Safe and Strong!!!
A safety and violence prevention program at the Ft. Davis Community Center, SE DC.

The girls' key take aways:

STRONG Belief- The idea that "No Means NO!"  That they can find and use their voices when needed.
SMART Skills- the girls successfully learned 10 self -defense movements that will help them respond to any unwanted advances.
BOLD Confidence- that they can and will respond to signs of violence when they see them and that they know where to go when they need help.

HANDS ON! and SHE-E-O
With the WNBA Washington Mystics, Girls Inc. brought over 200
girls from the DC metropolitan area together for two hands on events including fitness, fun and career exploration!

Girls learned individual sports skills, team skills and career/leadership skills. They toured the back office areas and learned about the many aspects of running a sports team- administrative, public relations, and more...

Players spent talk time as well as sports time with the girls, letting them know what it takes to be a team player, the importance of setting goals, working hard and doing your personal best.

Special time with star player Chastity Melvin was one of the many highlights!

Fall Forward...!

MY Challenge!  MY Choice!
Now through June, 2010
A health and wellness program at the Ft. Davis Community Center.

Girls are learning to make better decisions about their fitness, nutrition, and sexual health practices. They are committing to improve their health and wellness for the long term.  They know that good decision making and strong goal-setting are the foundations of developing and leading healthy lifestyles.  We propose the challenge to the girls.  THEY make the choice!
