Greetings!

As Labor Day approaches, we're reminded that the end of summer is near. We hope you enjoyed your summer as much as we enjoyed ours.

This month, we are proud to introduce Bernadette Gillick, PT, MS, who was awarded her second PODS II Scholarship in 2009. Now, she shares with us her experiences as a clinician, professor and researcher using constraint-induced movement therapy with post-stroke children.

In June, we introduced you to our summer intern from Marquette University, Mallory Fetta. Mallory took some time to document her experiences with the Foundation before leaving us to begin PT school this fall. We hope you enjoy reading Mallory's essay as much as we enjoyed having her here.

"Your Dollars at Work," our latest newsletter column, debuts this month. We continually receive progress reports form our awardees and there is always something striking in the reports that should be shared. Your support makes these grants possible, so it seems only fitting to share this with you.

Lastly, this year's Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge officially kicks off at National Student Conclave next month, as does our annual Online Auction. Read on to learn how you can get involved.

After working 17 years as a clinician and instructor, Bernadette received two doctoral scholarships which allowed her to pursue a PhD in Rehabilitation Science and investigate the outcomes of using constraint-induced movement training in post-stroke adolescents. Learn more about Bernadette and her research.
Staff Attends CORRT Retreat

Program Enters Fourth Year of K12 Grant
We introduced you to the Comprehensive Opportunities in Rehabilitation Research Training (CORRT) program last fall, a research mentorship program developed as a collaboration between seven universities.

Executive Director Bob Brennan and Scientific Program Administrator Karen Chesbrough had the opportunity to attend the annual CORRT retreat and learned the latest on the research conducted by CORRT participants.

We encourage you to learn more about CORRT and the Rehabilitation Research Career Development (RRCD) program, which are funded by the National Institutes of Health and are the first federal grants to support early career development for physical and occupational therapists.

Research News
This new feature provides further insight into how your valuable contributions are making a difference in the profession. We're excited to share your research news! Please e-mail your updates to Abby Matienzo.

Eric Vidoni, PT, PhD, received a $78,000 NIFTI in 2009 to study Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Executive Function in Early Alzheimer's Disease. The experience gained thus far through this fellowship has been invaluable for Eric and will serve as the basis for future intervention trials, including at least one clinical trial potentially funded by NIH. This fall, Eric will begin teaching neuroscience and introduction to clinical research at the University of Kansas Medical Center while continuing to move his fellowship program forward.

Beth Fisher, PT, PhD, received the $40,000 Magistro Family Research Grant in 2008. Her research project, "Comparison of Two Locomotor Training Programs on Brain and Behavior in Early Parkinson's Disease," implemented intensive exercise programs for Parkinson's Disease in an effort to slow down its effects. The study contributes to the support of referring individuals living with Parkinson's Disease to physical therapy soon after diagnosis rather than waiting until the severity of the disease has led to immobility and a need for family training and equipment evaluation.
Calendar Correction
Tepper-CalendarCorrection

For those of you who have the Foundation's 30th Anniversary Special Edition calendar, you know that our September pin-up is none other than our own Steve Tepper, PT, PhD!

Please note the following correction: in the lower right-hand corner, there is a picture of Steve and his wife, Linda. We mistakenly identified her as Linda Tepper, when in fact, she is Linda Paferi. Additionally, the group of students with Steve are actually from A.T. Still University in Phoenix, Arizona.

We apologize to Linda and the students for this error. If you haven't had the chance to read our July profile on Steve and his efforts to raise funds for the Foundation, check it out.
Summer Internship Ends
Mallory-Summer Intern
Mallory Leaves with Greater Appreciation for Research
Our summer intern, Mallory Fetta, arrived from the suburbs of Chicago in late May; a busy time for the Foundation, as we were preparing for our annual gala. For two months, she helped the staff with a variety of important tasks. Her constant enthusiasm, humor and willingness to jump in made her a joy to work with. We thank her for her hard work and wish her luck as she continues her studies at Marquette University this fall. Read about her summer.
