The Foundation thanks our Partners in Research, who help make our work possible. This month, the Foundation spotlights Kalypto Medical.
"We work closely with the physical therapy community for clinical input in developing our new wound treatment medical devices. Greetings!

|
It's the season of giving! This month, we would like to celebrate some individuals who have given their time and talents to help us carry on with our mission. In the spirit of the season, we share with you the story of a long-time physical therapy patient, Richard Hoffman, who chose to make a monthly gift to the Foundation in honor of his physical therapist.
We would like to thank our retiring Scientific Review Committee members, including Carolynn Patten, our retiring SRC Chair. Carolynn's guidance through the past 2 years has been invaluable.
Congratulations to the latest winners of our Kendall Scholarships and Research Grants! We are also proud to share that one of our past funding recipients, Fay Horak, was recently awarded with a $1 million NIH Challenge grant.
All that you read in this newsletter is made possible thanks to your generosity. Please remember the Foundation as you make your year-end gifts to ensure an even more successful 2010! Happy Holidays from all of us at the Foundation for Physical Therapy!

$1M Challenge Grant from NIH

Fay B Horak, PT, MS, PhD, was awarded a $1 million NIH Challenge award from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The proposal, "Development of an Instrumented Mobility Test," was aimed at creating a novel, commercially-available system for mobility assessment. Specifically, wireless inertial sensors worn on the ankles, wrists and trunk are used to quantify sit-to-stand, gait and turning during the timed up-and-go test. The new instrumented timed up and go test (iTUG) will permit clinical trials to be completed with fewer subjects, shorter duration, and less cost to accelerate the development of new therapies to improve mobility and quality of life for people with neurological disorders.
Horak's proposal was one of only 200 awarded out of over 30,000 applications. Horak received a research grant from the Foundation in 1985 and has also won the Marian Williams Research Award from the APTA.
Stay tuned for a complete profile on Horak and her work in next month's newsletter. |
