Greetings!

This month, we are very proud to unveil our newest grant opportunity. Many of the Foundation's grants are named in honor of those who have made a lasting impact on physical therapy.  At our annual Board meeting in September, it was proposed that this new grant be named the Clagett Family Research Grant in honor of Lansdale and Gladys Clagett.  Mr. and Mrs. Clagett were the grateful patients who included the Foundation in their will as a result of the care Mr. Clagett received from his physical therapist.

This opportunity is a direct result of our successful Destination: Research Excellence campaign and the generous bequest of the Clagett family.

We are also proud to feature six-time awardee Jill Heathcock and recognize one of our SRC members, Linda Fetters, who was recently named an endowed faculty chair at USC. We also highlight the results of a study funded by PTClinResNet.

All of us at the Foundation wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!  Thank you for helping to make this year such a success!

We continue our 30th Anniversary celebration by honoring another one of our scholars, Jill Heathcock, PT, MPT, PhD. A recipient of $90,000 in Foundation funding, Jill is dedicated to her research in pediatric physical therapy and is currently seeking evidence-based interventions to prevent developmental delays in preterm infants who have suffered from neonatal stroke. Read more about Jill.
Foundation Announces New Grant Opportunity
Claggett
Largest Grant Since CRN
Enduring more than 20 years of physical therapy after contracting polio at a young age, Lansdale Clagett could finally lift himself out of his wheelchair and walk again. This grateful patient presented the Foundation with a generous gift through his estate in support of the benefits of physical therapy that he experienced. The Clagett Family Research Grant, an exciting opportunity of $300,000, will be used to fund researchers seeking exercise interventions to treat older adults suffering from multiple chronic conditions.

This grant is also funded in part by gifts from the Destination: Research Excellence campaign. Leaders in physical therapy helped the Foundation raise the funds needed to explore this exciting new area of research and the Foundation is pleased to be investing these funds in this exciting new funding program.

Funded by Foundation
The results of a study funded by the Foundation as part of the Physical Therapy Clinical Research Network (PTClinResNet) for $1.5 million in 2002 were published in the November 2009 issue of Physical Therapy.  We are proud to acknowledge that Carolee Winstein, PT, PhD, FAPTA, George Beneck, PT, MS, OCS, John Popovich Jr, PT, DPT, ATC, CSCS, and Christopher Powers, PT, PhD, are four Foundation-funded researchers who contributed to this article. The study addresses the improved functions of patients who had undergone a lumbar microdiskectomy as a result of a 12-week exercise program.  APTA members may read the article here.

The Miami Project - NSC 2009
At the end of October, Foundation staff joined Miami and Marquette students as they kicked off the annual Miami-Marquette Challenge at the National Student Conclave in Miami, FL.  PT and PTA students from 56 schools pledged to raise funds in support of the Foundation's mission. Special thanks to North Coast Medical for sponsoring the NSC lanyards. Other exciting events included a tour, sponsored by Hocoma, of The Miami Project, a spinal cord injury research center, and an NSC session led by Foundation trustee, Richard Shields, PT, PhD, FAPTA, on prescribing exercise to optimally influence muscular and skeletal issues.
