Featured Charity
| |
I had planned to include a promotion article about an exhibition raising funds for Alert, but unfortunately the newsletter publication dates were not suitable. So instead I have featured Alert as the charity of the month.
For millennia the lion has been an instantly recognisable symbol of courage, authority and of wisdom for thousands of cultures throughout the world.
Now, this iconic creature is in danger of losing its place as the King of Beasts.
Only with our collective pride is there still time to save the lion; to ensure the future of "the fiercest and most magnanimous of the four footed beasts" (Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language, 1755).
The African lion: an ambassador promoting action to the benefit of all Africa's people and wildlife.

Greetings!
Well there we have it - I feel absolutely exhausted just watching those Olympics! Best ever? I think so. But hey, it's not over yet, we've got the Paralympics to look forward to which I'm sure will be equally exciting and if the crowd gets behind our athletes again well who knows what they can achieve.
Please don't forget to nominate a charity for a feature article or maybe there is an event coming up which could do with a bit of free PR. If so please email me and I'll do my best...

Discrimination Law trumps religious convictions
| | |
The Court of Appeal has upheld the decision of the High Court that a Christian couple who refused to allow a homosexual couple to share a bed at their hotel had unlawfully discriminated against them. The hotel owners refused double-bedded accommodation to unmarried couples on religious grounds. When the homosexual couple, who are civil partners, sought a room for the night, they were also refused. The Court confirmed that if a person wishes to run a business, it must be run in accordance with the law, no matter what their individual personal beliefs may be.

A reduction in hours worked by employees is a redundancy situation
| | |
The Employment Appeals Tribunal ("EAT") in Packman t/a Packman Lucas Associates v Fauchon UKEAT/0017/12 has confirmed that it is not necessary to have a reduction in the number of employees carrying out work of a particular kind in order to satisfy the statutory definition of redundancy under the Employment Rights Act 1996. Instead, reducing the amount of work to be done by the same number of employees can give rise to a redundancy situation.

Paralympics
| | |
So following the success of the Olympics, we can now draw breath and anticipate the start of the Paralympics on Wednesday 29 August. There are just a very few tickets still available, which means each event is virtually sold out. That's a fantastic response from the British public, so come on Team GB - we just know you'll do us proud! Personally I can't wait for the games to begin!
However...
Each Team GB Olympic gold medallist will be featured on their own Royal Mail stamp this summer. However, stamps due to be released in celebration of Great Britain's Paralympic success will not honour athletes individually.
Instead, six first-class stamps featuring group pictures of the medallists will be produced after the Games finish on 9 September.
Doesn't seem quite fair to me!

Go grab a coffee...

Four weeks before the Paralympic Games begin, you might be surprised to hear that disabled athletes are already making their mark ... in the Olympics.
The first breaking of a world record in the London 2012 Games was by a visually impaired archer on the opening day.
South Korea's Im Dong Hyun, who has 10 Percent vision in his left eye and 20 percent in his right, first broke the individual world record, then, as part of the team, helped to break another (team) world record in the first ranking rounds of both events at Lord's cricket ground. The team went on to win bronze on Saturday though had reached gold in both Athens and Beijing.
