Greetings!
At last spring is coming with a few warm days over the last month and some near record temperatures!
I have been delighted at the response to the request for Dancing Giraffe volunteers and whilst we have indeed taken on a few willing and able people we can always do with more. As such I have repeated the article from last month (down the bottom) in case you didn't see it.
I am equally delighted to be including the Invicta Foundation as the featured charity, and with seemingly a never ending stream of sad news coming back from Afghanistan this is such a worthwhile cause. If you feel so inclined there is a link within the main article where you can go to the website to make a donation. |

Braille smartphone app close to launch
| |
|
New technology to help blind people text using touchscreen mobile devices has been developed.
Researchers at Georgia Tech produced the app - to be made available on Apple and Android devices - based on the Braille writing system.
It is claimed typing with the app is up to six times faster than existing methods for texting without sight.
Access to technology for the visually-impaired is a growing issue due to the proliferation of touchscreens.

Beyond Disability... from the BBC
| |
|
I was delighted to see the launch of a new BBC television and radio series called Beyond Disability.
Beyond Disability is a new BBC One / Radio 5 live documentary season that captures the compelling stories of disabled people and their families as they take on everyday life and new challenges.
Tackling the reality of what it means to be disabled in the 21st century, Beyond Disability recounts the very personal experiences of individuals and families as they enter new phases of their lives.
Maxine Watson, Executive Producer, says: "BBC One has always been committed to exploring the lives of people who are disabled and this season is about ordinary disabled people dealing with the same everyday challenges that everyone faces - leaving home, choosing a career, raising a family. BBC One brings together a personal collection of stories about what it means to live a life not just defined by physical or mental limitations."

The Paralympics - all you need to know ...
| |
|
Who knows the meaning behind the term Paralympics? Take a step forward if you said 'Parallel Olympics'. Most people however get it wrong!
Whilst the 'regular' Olympic games will undoubtedly get most of the press and media coverage there is an unbelievable amount going on in the Paralympic world. Special events, special torch runs and much more and that's before the games start.

Dancing Giraffe needs YOU! | |
|
As a Community Interest Company we urgently need volunteers to help with some of the tasks involved in running such an organisation.
We already have over 30 volunteers on board, but we do need more.
In particular we need:
- Finance Director
- Journalists & Feature Writers
- Internet Researchers
- News Feed Analysts
- Editorial Researchers
- Drivers (collection and delivery drivers)
- Fundraising sales using Ebay for donated goods
- Fundraisers for table top sales and boot fairs
- Trainers (various roles)
- Contact researchers
- Bookkeepers
If you have some experience, can spare a few hours each week (or more) and would like to volunteer for any of the roles listed above, please email me. We will be pleased to hear from you. We do pay expenses where travel is required but most of the roles can be completed at home. In the longer term we will be looking to turn volunteer roles into permanent jobs, either full or part time, for those who wish to be employed.
Volunteering for us means we can reach and improve the quality of life of even more people affected by disability.

Go grab a coffee...
| |
|
Whilst looking a round for a suitable coffee time snippet, I came across this inspirational video of an armless surfer and a dog called Ricochet.
If you've got a few minutes, it's worth a quick look and it will leave you feeling amazed at the 'can do' attitude of some people.
