Dancing Giraffe

What is Dancing Giraffe? - An innovative internet community site: providing 'joined up' communication to people with disabilities and their carers.

Nothing like Dancing Giraffe currently exists. This website aims to not only support and inform, but to challenge, inspire and empower disabled people. It will include engaging editorial and comprehensive content, up-to-date reference and signposting together with user forums and social media.

How do we know so much about what disabled people want and need? Within the Dancing Giraffe team, a number of us are disabled, so we are providing a site that we've always wanted to use ourselves!

Dancing Giraffe is a Community Interest Company. This means we operate 'not-for-profit' as required by the CIC Regulator.

Greetings!
Well here we are into November and still the weather hasn't turned cold yet, although I hear we could be in for a big freeze during December.
I was delighted to sponsor the recent Tea Dance in support of the Colchester Carers Centre. Some £400 was raised towards the Mayor's Charity Fund, of which Colchester Carers Centre is a recipient of the largesse. It was great to see a number of you there and thank-you for your support. Photo to follow next month.
There's a lot going on at the moment, not least of which my involvement with a new charity currently in it's infancy... Dancing Giraffe. See the Featured Charity section for more information.
Plus also a new joint marketing initiative with a local construction company specialising in adaptations for the disabled and elderly. More news on that to follow.

New partnership initiative

Business Accreditation MarkI am currently in discussion with a local construction company to introduce a combined service of access audits with building adaptations to provide a potential one-stop approach to making premises accessible. Ultimately this will lead to the client being awarded use of the Accessible Business Mark®. We are currently having some marketing leaflets produced and I will provide further information on this unique service in next month's issue.

Dance for Parkinson's

Do you live with Parkinson's, or do you know or care for someone with Parkinson's?

If so you will be familiar with the difficulties of moving and walking. Recent research suggests that dancing can improve mobility and general well being for people with Parkinson's.

The Chelmsford Group of Parkinson's UK has recently formed a partnership with the Chelmsford Dance Studio to offer specialist dance classes for people with Parkinson's.

Classes are held every Tuesday from 11:00-12:00 noon in Great Baddow.

A glimpse at the future for the visually impaired

The Intrepid Museum Complex on Manhattan's west side includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, and supersonic airliner arranged along a pier in the Hudson River.

Their new audio-tactile booklet presents the layout of the complex, including detailed maps of each level of the aircraft carrier. Using the Talking Tactile Pen, users gets a guided tour of the complex, which can be taken on the exhibit floor, with book and pen in hand, or remotely, at home or at school.

Brightly colored touchable images and diagrams show key items along the path. As users touch each item they encounter with the tip of their pen, they hear extensive explanatory descriptions and recordings, including interviews with historical figures and experts on the subject matter. The system embeds detailed instructions for use, and allows user control of volume by tapping "buttons" on the back cover.

To find out more information click here, which also links on to a video of the pen in action.

It will be interesting to see when it is first launched over here!

And Finally - Go Grab a Coffee

This month sees the return of the ever popular Children in Need fundraising.    But where did it all start...

The BBC's first ever broadcast appeal for children was a five-minute radio broadcast on Christmas Day in 1927. The response was phenomenal and it raised £1,143 18s 3d which was split between 4 prominent children's charities.

Since then over £600million has been raised. Click here to find out more about the history behind Pudsey and Children in Need or if you feel inspired to get involved or make a donation click here ...
