CHARITY STARTS AT HOME
Do you know of any football team in the country who has a charity as its logo on the back of their shirts? Wivenhoe Town Football Club do!
Wivenhoe Town Football club have agreed to have Barney Brain on the back of their shirts for home games, in the coming season. Barney Brain is the logo of SCANS (Society for children affected by neurological symptoms)
Scans was looking for a home. They had a vision of a Centre of Excellence for children with neurological conditions to be able to take part in Sport, Art, Music and Drama. We wanted a football/sport pitches, a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, children's adventure playground, and much more. Wivenhoe Town FC had just the place. They were looking for an organisation that wanted to come along and use their facilities during the week when all of the facility was sitting idle. Jayne Marshall (SCANS Chairman) met with Carl Callan (Wivenhoe Town FC Chairman) and there was an instant rapport between the two and that SCANS aims and vision was recognised in the aims of the stadium. So how did SCANS come about?

Greetings!
Great news for those of you who managed to get some (or maybe all) of your tickets for the 2012 Olympics, and my commiseration to those of you who didn't. Better luck in the next round! But don't forget the Paralympics... the tickets go on sale later this year. See the article below for more information.
As usual there are a variety of newsworthy items within this issue and I am delighted to be supporting SCANS as the charity of the month.
At the very least this month I would encourage you all to view a one minute YouTube video which may just change the way you see things around you. I found it quite inspirational.
The article last month regarding the lip-reading test was very well received and I understand that a good number of you went to test your ability. I'd like to know how you got on!
Harrow Churches Housing Association Accreditation
SMP Business MarkLast month I reported that following their recent accreditation review, Harrow Churches Housing Association had been awarded the Accessibility Accreditation Mark to five separate premises providing sheltered accommodation for people with a variety of disabilities.

Here's a photo of the presentation of one of their certificates to Mr Robert Goodman, Maintenance Manager of the Harrow Churches Housing Association.

Harrow buildingAs Mr Goodman said... 'We are very proud to be awarded the Accessible Business MarkŪ developed by Susan Pattrick. Schemes such as ours offer substantial social and financial advantages over alternatives like residential and nursing care. A key remit of our early planning at Ewart House was the well-being that a well-designed environment and interior space would afford our residents and this national award bears testament to that ambition'.

This photo is of the outside of one of the new buildings showing the 'pacing area' where residents with dementia can go to walk in a safe environment.  It is also a sensory garden for residents with visual impairments.  They can sit there in peace and quiet to listen to the birds or admire the scent from the plants and bushes.....

STOP PRESS! - Get Naked Calendar

I am delighted, if not a little nervous, to be involved with the Get Naked Calendar, being organised by the Business Woman's Network in aid of Farleigh Hospice.

On 20th June over 25 ladies will be getting naked for the photo shoot at a secret location, all to be done in the best possible taste.

The calendar will then be launched at a special networking event on 7th July at Lexdon Woods Golf Centre, where the Business Woman's Network will be hosting the event and the calendar will be on sale. All proceeds will be to Farleigh Hospice. This event will be free to everyone who wishes to attend.

Further details of the launch will be next month's newsletter which will be issued one week earlier than usual to help promote the event. But if you want to know more details in advance feel free to contact me.

So please keep the 7th July free in your diaries, and wish me and the ladies good weather for the 20th June!

If you would like to know more about the Business Woman's Network, please visit the website.

Refusing to grant time off to attend Mosque

In the recent case of Cherfi v G4S Security Services Ltd, the Employment Appeal Tribunal has upheld an employment tribunal decision that it was lawful for an employer to refuse a Muslim employee time off to attend a Mosque on Friday lunchtimes. Click here for more information.

Negligent statements about former employees

In the recent case of McKie v Swindon College, the High Court had to decide whether Swindon College ("the College") owed a duty of care to Mr McKie, a former employee, in relation to negative comments made about him in an e-mail, some years after he left. Click here for more information.

The Power of Words

Here's a short one-minute YouTube video to inspire. It's well worth a look and very poignant. Maybe it will change the way you see things...

Lawford Ladies Football Team sponsorship

I am delighted to announce that I have recently agreed to sponsor the kit of the Lawford Ladies Football team. I can't promise to be on the touchline during the depths of winter, but I will be there in spirit!

More details and photos to follow....

And Finally - Go Grab a Coffee

Last month you may recall this slot was dedicated to a lip-reading test which I know some of you enjoyed following your feedback. To continue the theme, here's a link to an article in the Guardian which claims to know what was really said... or do they?
