Sponsorship Opportunity

Chelmsford Carnival

Colchester Carnival is back and will happen this year on Saturday July 16th. The event has been taken over by Colchester Round Table, which is a charity, so all profits after expenses will go to benefit good causes in the Colchester area.

They want this year's event to be a real community occasion, and the theme is to be 'colour and noise'. They're looking for community groups, non-profit organisations and schools to join the procession - for free - while local businesses can take part for a nominal fee of £100. Businesses can also sponsor different parts of the day from just £250. They are now asking voluntary and charity groups to apply for grants from the carnival fund, and the decisions will be made after the carnival takes place.

All day in Castle Park there will be a show ground and funfair, with family activities, food, drink and stalls. To take part or find out more click here or find them on Facebook.

Greetings!
Can you believe this weather? It just seems to be lasting forever, although I have heard a few people now asking for rain! Are we ever satisfied?
This month's issue covers a variety of articles and rather than having a featured charity this month I have been asked to promote the Colchester Carnival who are looking for sponsors.
So please don't forget if you've got a charity or event that needs a little free PR, then please do email me.

Nick Athorne - inspirational and thought-provoking

Nick AthorneSome of you may recall that we featured Nick Athorne in the June 2010 issue under the inspirational person section. Nick is a business administrator who had a stroke but who is such a positive person that he has got himself almost back to full health. Good news indeed but I think his story prompts a few questions...

  • What would you do if you had a member of staff in the same position or if it was even you that was in that same position?
  • How would you cope?
  • What strategies would you put in place to assist you or your member of staff to a full recovery?

Click here for an update on Nick's progress and my own thoughts on answers to the above.

PS, Nick is running a Charity Networking Dinner in September. Whilst the final details have yet to be finalised, you can register your interest here by sending Nick an email.

Autism Awareness - Looking beyond 'just naughty'

I am indebted to a reader who sent me through this link to an article that appeared in BBC News Wales last month, which coincided with Autism Awareness month.

A disability rights campaigner has set herself the target of making Cardiff the UK's first autism-friendly city. Nadine Honeybone has set up The Autism Directory Wales to support parents and educate the public.

She claims she has been refused service, and verbally abused by other shoppers, who assumed her six-year-old autistic son was being "just naughty".

The Autism Directory Wales aims to support parents and educate the public, by demonstrating to business that there is a profit to be made from autistic customers.

Danny Snelling does the marathon...

Danny SnellingI was delighted to be one of many sponsors who supported Danny Snelling in his London Marathon run last month. He completed his run in just under 4:30 and raised over £3500 for East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Here's a link to his YouTube video chronicling the event.

Well done Danny!

Supporting Essex Air Ambulance ...

Russell WatsonIn support of the Essex Air Ambulance who are benefiting from this event, I have been asked to help promote the event.

Cruise line strands disabled senior on island

Here's an astonishing story from across the pond that was recently featured in the Daily Tribune.

Potholes don't affect just road users!
The car drivers amongst us are always wary of potholes in the roads, but what about wheelchair users facing the same problems on the pavements?
Birkett Long solicitors recently featured a news article of a wheelchair user who fell out of his wheelchair as a result of a pothole and won substantial damages. Read more ...
And Finally - Go Grab a Coffee ...
Who knows what Prince Harry was whispering to Prince William and Pippa Middleton at various stages throughout the Royal Wedding, but it turned many people into would-be lip-reading experts trying to guess what they were saying!
So how good are you a lip-reading? Here's a fascinating insight and a small test to get you started. Take the test ...
