Greetings!
Well last month saw the start of an early spring, and the weather over the last few days feels like the start of an early summer?
As many of you will know I suffered a recent bereavement and have not been concentrating on the business. I am starting to get back into networking again now and in the next few newsletters I will update you on what SMP is doing. This month I shall be highlighting the access problems at Broomfield hospital (see below).
Having offered the opportunity to promote a few charity events and news in last months issue I am delighted to include articles from Essex Wildlife Trust, Parkinson's Awareness Week and Transitions Network.
Accessibility at Broomfield Hospital

Many of you will know that I was the access consultant for Broomfield Hospital and it is rearing its' head again. There have been many problems with the build and design and specifically the wayfinding. There are many rumblings and misgivings about the efficacy of the build. These are being expressed by disabled people who have to visit the hospital and do not know where they should go as the signage is exceptionally poor.

Business needs to be aware that with an ageing population and the increased prevalence of more serious visual impairments, it needs to address the way that people with a vision impairment are treated. It doesn't cost very much to provide large print menus for instance or to provide information in a format that the individual can read. When it comes to signage, all signage should be in a size that anyone can read from a distance or close to! Don't let anyone talk you into signage that is not fit for purpose, even if they are a renowned company who have experience of doing wayfinding. Do your homework and find the right company. SMP Consultancy can help you do this.

  • Most people who get Parkinson's are aged 50 or over but younger people can get it too. One in 20 is under the age of 40.
  • Up to 7 million people in the UK are touched by Parkinson's in some way.
  • 7.4 million people worldwide are estimated to have Parkinson's
Everyone living with Parkinson's experiences it differently. For a simple factsheet on Parkinson's click here, or if you want to know more go to www.parkinsons.org.uk
Transitions Network - Chelmsford

Transitions logoChelmsford Transition Town - a community response to climate change.

The Transition Network is an international community led response to the pressures of climate change and fossil fuel depletion. Its aim is to raise awareness of these pressures and their wider implications and to provide a framework within which resources can be identified in each community and used to benefit local people, be they consumers or producers. The consequent energy reduction and investment in the environment will create a more sustainable world. Read more ...

New disabled on-line magazine - Can you help?
Get involved with a new on-line magazine for the disabled community. The magazine aims to promote the possibilities and opportunities available to anyone, whatever their disability.

Later this year a team of people hope to launch a new on-line magazine for disabled people and carers in Essex. They are looking for people to help with this very exciting project.

This on-line magazine is the brainchild of Shaun Moffat who lives in Colchester and campaigns for RNIB. Since he recently became sight impaired, Shaun has turned his entrepreneurial attention to better communication for the disabled community. For the past two years he has been planning this much-needed on-line community magazine which will be run by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.

Shaun says the website will bring together all we need online through one website. It will include news, shopping, travel, sport and leisure. The site, which is being built as fully accessible, brings together information about activities, events, services and support available throughout Essex.

'Communication is essential in life, so we'll provide the opportunity to talk to each other' said Shaun. 'Using Forums, Facebook, Twitter and Blogs, we can share our stories, compare notes and have a bigger impact on things that need to change. We'll be able to promote good services, exciting activities and interesting events.'

Would you like to be involved? Shaun is bringing together a team of people who can help in building this exciting project. Anyone who has experiences of life, work and leisure with a disability has a story to tell. He is looking for writers who are articulate and computer literate. Shaun also needs help with the design building and content of the website.

To find out more about how you can help, please contact Shaun Moffat on 01206 571199 or email Shaun
