Greetings!
Is that Spring in the air? As I write it's a beautiful spring day outside, the start of a new year for many, and the start of a new series within this newsletter...
I am conscious that charities have started to struggle in these uncertain economic times. So I shall try to help by promoting one or two charity events through this newsletter. So if you've got an event that could use a little free publicity, just email me some details and I'll do my best. No promises and strictly on a first come, first served basis. Please note the copy deadline for the next issue is Tuesday 5th April.
This initiative has been prompted by the articles last month where you may recall we featured the ICAN charity and an article on Talking Tots who were raising funds for them through the Chatterbox Challenge. So I've also provided an update this month on their achievement.
I CAN Chatterbox Challenge ... Update

Talking Tots logoAmanda Smith, who runs the only Talking Tots centre in Essex, reported that over 60 children took part through her Talking Tots classes and raised an impressive £470 and counting. Not bad for a group of Under 5s!

They also took part in a Guinness World Record attempt on the 1st March. Whilst the exact figures won't be available until May as they are still being verified, they already know that over 16,000 children were singing exactly the same song at exactly the same time throughout the country - Impressive!

Want to know more? visit the Talking Tots website, or you can email Amanda.

Compulsory Retirement - not age discrimination.

Did you know... Compulsory retirement CAN be carried out for any employee who will be aged 65 or over before 1 October 2011.

The government has published a revised draft set of regulations which corrects a previously identified problem. As now drafted, the transitional provisions will apply to any employees who attain the age of 65 (or any such normal retirement age where this is higher than 65) before 1 October 2011 providing the correct procedure detailed in previous briefings is followed. Accordingly, employees who have already reached age 65 prior to 6 April can be retired under the transitional provisions.

The End of Pavement Parking?
The Government is making it easier for councils to tackle pavement parking and stop it causing an obstruction to pedestrians Regional and Local Transport Minister Norman Baker recently announced.
Vehicles parked on pavements can cause particular problems for people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and those with pushchairs. The Minister has written to councils prompting them to use their powers to prevent parking on the pavement where it is a problem.
Along with the letter, the Department for Transport has given all councils in England permission to use signs to indicate a local pavement parking ban. Until now councils have had to gain special signs authorisation from Government each time they want to put a pavement parking ban in place.
While in some circumstances pavement parking is unavoidable - for example in narrow residential roads with no off-street parking - the Government believes that in many cases it can be avoided. Pavement parking is completely banned in London.
Chelmsford City FC - Disability Programme...
Although the registration event has now taken place, I thought it still worth including information about Chelmsford City's Disability Football Programme.
Having recently been awarded a grant from the newly formed Football Conference Community Club Development Fund, Chelmsford City have launched their Football Disability programme. This is open to male and female participants over 16 years old, with coaching sessions and summer school activities.
The 3-year plan is to develop a disability team which will play under the Chelmsford FC banner.

And Finally - Go Grab a Coffee ...

And if you're going to try to get tickets... Good luck!
