Greetings!
My heartfelt thanks to those of you who have expressed your sympathy and support following my recent bereavement. It has meant so much to me and given me considerable strength going forward. As a result, this is a somewhat shortened newsletter this month, and regretfully there is no Charity of the Month, nevertheless I wish you all a happy and peaceful new year. |
| Inspirational Person - Ray Edwards MBE | | |
The observant among you may recall that we featured Ray Edwards in last month's issue.
I am delighted to say that Ray was awarded the MBE in the New Years Honours List.
Alongside his charity, Limbcare, and running his own business - Access Consultants, Ray is also an active member of my Expert Panel, whose role it is to vet and audit applications for use of the Accessibility Accreditation Business Mark.
Congratulations Ray! |
| EU Disability Strategy 2010 - 2020 ... | |
People with disabilities - it's all about access to equal rights.
As full citizens, people with disabilities have equal rights and are entitled to dignity, equal treatment, independent living and full participation in society. Enabling people with disabilities to enjoy these rights is the main purpose of the EU's long-term strategy for their active inclusion. Centre piece of the European Disability Strategy (2004-2010) is the Disability Action Plan (DAP). By 2010, the European Commission wants to see improvements in employment prospects, accessibility and independent living. Disabled people are involved in the process on the basis of the European principle: 'Nothing about disabled people without disabled people'.

| Life Opportunities Survey ... | |
The Life Opportunities Survey is the first major survey to explore disability in terms of the social barriers to participation that people experience. The interim results are now available from their website.
This is part 1 of the survey, with a second part to come later in the year.
The outcome from the survey has implications to the business community and I shall outline these in an article in the February issue.
In the meantime if you want to know more please click here for more information ... |
| Announcing Trailblazers ... | |
Trailblazers is a new initiative where disabled people are being allowed to buy services themselves without being dictated to by the County Council Community Teams.
I am pleased to say that Essex County Council is one of seven county councils throughout the country supporting this venture.

Colin Firth: 'Stammer the wrong way and it is comedic'.
The King's Speech, which opened on Friday 7th and is tipped for Oscar honours, concerns the terrible struggle George VI had with his speech impediment when he came to the throne in 1936. Colin Firth, in a rare interview, and director Tom Hooper talk about the making of this deeply moving film.
