My Featured Charity | |
In April 2010, Ray Edwards set up Limbcare, a charity that aims to help and support limb impaired people. This has been a vision of his since he became an amputee in 1987 and has made him more determined than ever to give something back to society, especially to disabled people and to offer hope and inspiration through the knowledge he has gained with his own disability. Limbcare's mission statement says 'Creating independence for all limb impaired people and helping individuals improve their quality of life, offering empathy not sympathy'. That is the charity's aim and everything it does is to support that aim. The future plans of Limbcare are to obtain a property. This will be known as 'Limbcare Centre' and will be a very unique opportunity to help individuals, their families and carers to come together to get help and support with counselling, health and fitness, access and property adaptations and to enjoy a relaxation area and fully equipped gym. We have a dedicated team at Limbcare all with the same desire and determination, many are amputees themselves and as such the ethos of Limbcare is becoming a reality. If you would like to find out more about Limbcare its work and the team or make a donation to this worthwhile cause then please contact us at www.limbcare.org |

Greetings!
First of all I would like to extend my best wishes to you all for the festive season and as we leave 2010 behind, let's hope that 2011 proves to be a good one for you. I am so pleased to receive such genuinely positive comments regarding the newsletter, and also that people take the trouble to write in - it makes it so much more worthwhile.
The six-part series on the Equality Act concludes this month with a look at Sex and Sexual Orientation.
My featured charity for this month is Limbcare, a recently launched charity by Ray Edwards who is also my inspirational person for the month too. Let's give Ray maximum exposure so please forward this email to people you know. |

The Equality Act 2010 | |
In last month's issue we covered aspects of Race, Religion and Belief under The Equality Act. Each month as I have addressed individual aspects in a little more detail, I do hope this has encouraged you to think about how well you / your organisation is placed in understanding your obligations.
The series concludes this month with Sex Discrimination and Sexual Orientation... |
| Equality Act 2010 - Sex Discrimination and Sexual Orientation | |
The Equality Act 2010 brought into force two new areas under sex discrimination and one under sexual orientation. The two new areas under the heading of 'sex' are associative discrimination and discrimination by perception.
The new section under sexual orientation is harassment by a third party.
Equality laws exist to prevent those with a protected characteristic being discriminated against because of that characteristic and this applies to sex and sexual orientation.
There is just a little too much to cover here, but I really would encourage you to read the full article here, so that you understand what this means to you.
If you have missed any of the series, all previous issues of the newsletter are available through the archive section on the SMP website.
SMP Consultancy can provide advice and guidance on all aspects of the Equality Act. If you're in any doubt about your responsibilities then please call me or email me... |
| Inspirational Person - Ray Edwards | | |
A long while ago, Ray became a paraplegic and as a result needed a home that was adapted for his needs. When he came out of hospital, he discovered that builders were not equipped to be able to deliver what he needed. As a result, he set up his own business called Access Consultants, a unique company offering advice and help for disabled people and the elderly in modifying and adapting homes and properties. He offered 'empathy not sympathy', and as a quad amputee he understood the value of that statement.
