Greetings!
I'm pleased to say the new series on Disability Etiquette launched in last month's newsletter has been particularly well received. So this month we feature etiquette regarding the visually impaired ...
The inspirational people section also enjoys good feedback, and this month we feature Simon Weston.
In 1982 the Sir Galahad was destroyed in Bluff Cove on the Falkland Islands. On board was Simon Weston, Welsh Guardsman, a name and face that was going to become well known for his struggle to overcome his injuries (46% burns) and redefine his role in life. Simon's message is one of achievement, of triumph over adversity, of seizing the moment and succeeding. Read more below...
 Disability Etiquette - Visually Impaired
This month covers some aspects of dealing with people who are visually impaired...
  • If you want to provide help to a visually impaired person, ask them if you can help them before doing anything.
  • If they do not need your help, they will tell you.
  • If they do they will ask and tell you how to help them perhaps by allowing them to take your elbow to guide them where they want to go, e.g. crossing the road
  • If they have a guide dog, it will always be on the disabled person's left. Therefore any assistance you provide must be from the right hand side.
Inspirational People - Simon Weston

Simon WestonToday Simon takes the opportunity to convey his story in order to motivate and encourage those, who like him, want to move on to the next goal, whatever that may be! The only obstacles to achieving one's targets and successes are those you create for yourself. His words never fail to inspire you.
Simon's irrepressible humour, infectious enthusiasm and immediately engaging personality, have made him the number one choice of many companies who invite him back to speak time and again. An inspiring and moving keynote speaker, Simon is also a wonderful and humorous after dinner speaker.

Don't get bitten - a recent ruling...
So just what does 'Day-to-Day Activities' mean in terms of how it might be applied to disabled people. Read more about a recent court case regarding a policeman on night shift.
In the news... Anxiety and the economic gloom
Disability comes in many forms and not just the obvious.
British workers are experiencing panic attacks and insomnia because of stress associated with the economic downturn, a survey has suggested. Norwich Union Healthcare polled 200 GPs, 200 business leaders and 1,000 employees for its Health of the Workplace survey.
