Greetings!

It's that time of year for reflection and goal setting. Do some of your 2010 goals embrace career progress such as leadership development, more responsibilities, a promotion, improved work-life balance, or even a new job?

The ritual of setting resolutions can be helpful - if we create them in a positive manner, not by focusing on what we think we failed at in the previous year. Let's concentrate on what we want to do to gain more job satisfaction, feel like we make a difference in our communities, and support our personal life.

Instead of dwelling on what you feel your weaknesses are, put your energy on moving toward your ideal vision for 2010.

How can you begin to identify what you want and what your intentions for 2010 are?

Time for Reflection

Spend some time reflecting on:

* What made you happy at your job in the past year? What did you really enjoy? This is what you want more of and where you feel can feel passionate - either in your current position or a new one.

* Where were you successful? Your strengths will emerge during this reflection.

* Where do you feel like you made a difference - either in your organization or for your community? Again, this is an area you'll want to build upon.

* What drained your energy over the past year? Can you remember times you had less motivation to go to work? Why? These times will point to areas you'll want either eliminate the energy drain if you can, or re-frame your response if you cannot eliminate it.

Next Steps

* From your list, identify 5 clear intentions that build upon what you've learned about 2009. Build upon your successes, what made you happy, where you made a difference, and what you've discovered about your energy drains. Write out or draw your ideal vision for your career in 2010.

* Find support once you've identified your 5 intentions. Tell your friends and co-workers so you don't feel alone as you progress in your career development.

* Work with a coach who can keep you on track in incrementally making progress toward your goals and supporting you in a time of change.

I'd love to hear from you about what you discovered during these exercises.
