Attention MS4s:

URI Cooperative Extension

Seeking Municipal Partner for Future Public Rain Garden Installation Site

The URI Cooperative Extension is seeking a municipality (i.e. Parks and Recreation, Public Works) to partner with to complete a public installation site for future URI Residential Rain Garden Trainings. The training is offered to municipal officials, environmental professionals, and homeowners interested in learning to site, design, install and maintain residential-scale rain gardens. In addition to a full day classroom session, the training includes a field installation component where trainees assist with installation of a rain garden (planting, mulching, etc.).

Here is an opportunity to work with URI Cooperative Extension staff to design and implement a demonstration rain garden in your community.

The partner municipality agrees to provide the following support:

  • A public site appropriate for a residential-scale rain garden
  • A nearby indoor training location suitable for 40 people
  • A municipal staff person willing to coordinate logistics with URI and municipal staff
  •  Equipment for minor excavation (if needed)
  •  Plant material and mulch as specified by URI
  •  Installation tools for trainee installation day (i.e. shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows)
  •  Commitment to maintain the rain garden (i.e. weeding, plant replacement) for a period of three years via town staff or volunteers

The URI Cooperative Extension agrees to provide the following support:

  • Site assessment
  • Rain garden siting
  • Rain garden design and plant specification
  • Installation assistance
  • Maintenance support
  • Signage
  • Assist municipality in seeking media coverage of the installation
  • Up to three complimentary URI Residential Rain Garden Training registrations for partner municipal staff

Thank you for considering a rain garden in your municipality!
