Raising A Reader MA:
Early literacy for lifelong achievement

Winter Newsletter 2012

Mayor Joe Curtatone reads to children in Somerville
Somerville's Mayor Joe Curtatone supports Raising A Reader MA's high impact early literacy program.
"...my goal as mayor is do everything I can to make Somerville a great place to live, work, play and raise a family. To achieve that goal, we've implemented plans to develop the city's economy, expand and improve municipal services, and promote recreation by making the most of our city's limited open space.

But nothing - nothing - has done more for our community and its future than our efforts to promote educational opportunities for our children, both inside and outside the classroom."

Mid-Year Progress Report

"Oh what a year!"

This is how Raising A Reader MA's Executive Director, Donna DiFillippo, introduces the FY (fiscal year) 2012 mid-year progress report.

The report, available online, details Raising A Reader MA's ongoing work to deepen the strengths of its core program model, expand the number of children and families with whom we work, and respond to the state's new Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge grant.

Interactive, Dialogic Reading works

The Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), Sherri Killins, is committed to supporting the use of evidence-based instructional practices in preschools, child care centers, and other community-based locations where children receive early learning support. To help community-based programs decide what programs to use for their early literacy instruction, EEC is distributing the What Works for Early Language and Literacy Development  fact sheet written by Alison Chrisler, and Thomas Ling (2011) and produced by Child Trends.

This fact sheet summarizes the academic literature that shows that Raising A Reader MA's style of interactive, Dialogic Reading is shown to have a statistically significant impact on children's vocabulary development, verbal fluency and listening skills.
