Adrienne Zoble's Marketing Myth #57:
Business is slow.
Go make some cold calls.
|
| |
Hello, :
If you're getting sick and tired of reading my rants against cold calls, it's because I won't let up until I stop hearing about so many examples of people who are still making them.
Summer seems to attract people back to cold-calling. Since business is slow, they don't know what else to do. This is particularly a male syndrome. Women at least enjoy schmoozing over breakfast, lunch or coffee. Men resist, because they're sure they won't know what to say.
Let me assure you there are other things to talk about besides sports and the stock market. And, unless you're certain that you and your guest(s) are politically pretty much on the same page, I wouldn't advise discussing the debt ceiling or any other political hot buttons of the moment.
Folks, it's not about you; it's about them. It's about showing you're interested in what they have to say, not interrupting them at every turn or listening with half an ear, until you can get in what you wish to talk about.
Marketing is about building relationships. People buy based on confidence, comfort level and trust. How often have you heard me say or write this? Cold calls are Unknown to Unknown, and I know how quickly I get rid of cold-callers. I don't give a hoot about what they're peddling, and I don't trust them . . . period.
Until the late 90s, you could figure that, for every 100 cold calls you'd make, you'd get five appointments. Then the number dropped from five to 4%. What a ton of rejection! It must be deadly.
When people mispronounce one or both of my names, I know it's a cold call. When someone asks a patronizing question like, "Are you having a good day?" I know it's a cold call. When someone asks for the Purchasing Director of our company, they're dead in the water. And the recordings? What a waste!
With companies being more careful about their expenditures today than they ever were, what would prompt you to think they'd purchase from a total stranger, who isn't even local? Aren't there enough examples of spam being written about as warnings?
There are so many viable, efficient, effective options to cold-calling. Check out our Schmoozing Calendar at www.azobleassoc.com. It's now 50% off, but still chock full of 15 months of ideas of generic people to invite for breakfast, lunch or coffee. Little expense or time (you have to eat, anyway) and major ROI.
Stop resisting! Instead of setting yourself up for rejection from people you'll never meet, call a few people you know and invite them to join you for whatever. You'll be amazed at the results.
