Adrienne Zoble's Marketing Myth #32:
We have neither the money nor the time to waste
on marketing right now.
    AZA - TempHello, :

Oh really?  Then perhaps you don't know what marketing is.

When you have a live person, instead of a complicated technological menu, answering your telephone, that's marketing.

When you return a call or respond to an email within an hour or two, that's marketing.

When you take the time to learn and participate in the latest forms of social marketing, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, that's marketing.

When you call a frequent customer to say that something he or she might like has just arrived, that's marketing.

When you call a distant client to announce that an email quote is on its way, and you follow up to confirm its receipt and answer questions, that's marketing.

When your outside sales and inside customer service people are trained to stay in touch after sales and projects are completed, that's marketing.

When you personalize your mailings, instead of sending them to "Business Owner" or just the company name, that's marketing.

When you present a seminar or write an article and position you and others in your firm as experts, that's marketing.

When you simply make it easier for people to do business with you, instead of asking them to call back later, that's marketing.

These are just some of the myriad examples of marketing, and you might well have many more. So please don't say that marketing is a waste of money and time.  The irony is that, as you hear about businesses closing during this difficult economy, most of them killed their marketing.  They didn't keep their names out there.

Has business slowed down?  Sure it has.  I've said it before, however, and I'll say it again: there's still plenty of business around.  It's my responsibility to ensure that you're receiving your fair share.

When you say you have neither the money nor the time to market, you're putting your company, practice or organization in peril.  It's time for a Marketing Plan that will keep you and your name out there.  And remember:  in marketing it's not what you spend, but how you spend it.
