Marketing Myth #29:
In this economy, we can't get out as much as we used to. |
| |
 |
That's ridiculous. In this economy, you should be getting out more than ever. Let's do the arithmetic. If you took one person to breakfast or lunch once a week, you would pay an average of $25.00 for two; lunch might run $35.00 (I've just upped the costs, to allow for restaurant prices in the major metropolitan areas). Therefore, two lunches and two breakfasts would "break your marketing budget" by approximately $120.00. You can't run an ad for that amount! Now, let's talk about the economy. Do you, a business owner or executive, really not have $120.00 to spend, spread out over four weeks? If that's actually the case, then reduce this amount by inviting colleagues to coffee, rather than breakfast or lunch. You see, while you're trying to save money, you're costing your company, big time. The most important aspect of running a business is keeping your name out there. Great employees, quality control, customer service, expertise, experience, innovative products and services - they're all extremely important, but they're meaningless if nobody knows about you. So instead of foolishly keeping yourself and your staffers in your office ("we're not spending any money right now, until we get through this"), think about what your questionable marketing savings plan is doing to your business. Years ago in New Jersey, the NJ Dental Association ran a very successful billboard campaign throughout the state: "Ignore your teeth, and they'll go away." Well, to paraphrase: ignore your business; and it will go away. Now is the time to position yourself and your company away from all the conventional thinkers who are feeling sorry for themselves and show your smiling face and your confident outlook. Now is the time to maintain client relationships and build alliances. Now is the time to show the world that you refuse to participate in the recession (thank you, Sam Walton). The country will get through all the economic uncertainty, just as we always come through; but cutting back on crucial marketing that costs $120.00 or less is not the way to do it.
