What is all this talk about Social Media?

You may have heard a great deal about how social media is being used during disasters.  Maybe you have an account with Twitter or Facebook or you host your own Blog.  After success stories from Joplin and other areas around the country, Emergency Managers are beginning to pay closer attention to how social media is being used by the public and evaluating how they could use it to help disseminate critical information during disasters.

According to Eric Qualman, author of Socialnomics: How social media transforms the way we live and do business "If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest country in the world behind only China and India."

Video: Social Media Revolution 2011

With so many people participating in some way with social media, an increased expectation is developing that we will be listening during a disaster and responding with information via social media networks.

As a volunteer you can learn more about social media and ways in which you might be willing to help monitor messages and microblogs to report back information during a disaster.  It might be that you use this system to also report information from the field in addition to radio communications.  We need your assistance in communicating that social media should not replace calling 9-1-1 for emergencies, but may supplement the useful information we are able to obtain during emergencies that help improve our response.

You can practice your social media skills by finding us at our page on Facebook, Twitter and our training videos on YouTube.  Use the links in the left hand bar to connect with our pages.  On Twitter, use the search "#KitUpdate" in order to see our regular posts on suggestions for updating your kit.  Social media is only as useful as the content we create, so if you have suggestions for what we should post in order to make the content relevant and informative, please email cert@anaheim.net.

CERT/RACES Welcome Committee

As you know, it is a challenging multi-step process to become a volunteer for the CERT or RACES program.  We want to make sure that those who have shown interest in volunteering not only have a friendly face to introduce them to others at the meetings, but also to call and follow up to ensure that background checks, classes, etc. are getting done to successfully become a volunteer.

Please let me know if you are interested in being on the CERT/RACES Welcome Committee.  You will be assigned an interested potential volunteer and will encourage to help them follow up on records processing and meet them at a meeting to introduce them to others as well as their assigned CERT team.  Email cert@anaheim.net for your new volunteer assignment!
