Advocate: Protect the Refundable Tax Credit

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable tax credit for working individuals who earn low or moderate incomes, is in danger of losing the improvements that were made to it in 2009. Improvements increased the EITC rate for working families with three or more children from 40% to 45%, effectively increasing the maximum credit for these families by nearly $600. The financial penalty some couples receive once they marry was also reduced. The EITC is broadly considered the nation's largest and most effective anti-poverty program.

Notre Dame soap reclamation project
Notre Dame Soap Reclamation Project: Update

Former UWSJC intern and Notre Dame student Andy Boes began the Soap Reclamation Project in the fall of 2010. Morris Inn agreed to recycle their unused products: soap, shampoos, conditioners and lotions. These products were reclaimed by Boes, stored, sorted, and re-batched by UW staff and volunteers. The products were then dispersed through 17 local food pantries in the People Gotta Eat (PGE) Network. To date, the project has reclaimed over a ton of product from the area landfills and put it in the hands of people who truly need it.

Notre Dame Soap Reclamation Project: Leads to a job for a local man

During an interview with WSBT about the Soap Reclamation Project, a family utilizing a PGE food pantry was interviewed. During the interview, it was revealed by the father that he was an unemployed diesel mechanic whose tools had been stolen. Because most mechanic positions require the employee to provide their own tools, he could not find employment. After the story aired, WSBT was contacted by a company who offered the gentleman a job. Thank you WSBT!
