Introduction to Twitter
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a social networking site where you can make status updates otherwise known as "tweets" limited to 140 characters. Think of Twitter as the social networking form of sending a text message. Your tweets send information to your "followers" (similar to your "friends" on Facebook or "connections" on LinkedIn) quickly. It's beneficial to follow people or organizations that tweet information appealing to you.
You can tweet about anything you want; whether you had a bad hair day or found an educational article, you can tweet it.
Let's Review the Basics
@WOCNSociety - The @ symbol + the username of your choice. If you want to tweet to someone, you must type the @ symbol and their username.
#woundcare - Incorporate hash tags (#) into your posts. This will allow you to see what others who used that hash tag are talking about. When you click on a hash tag, it takes you to a page showing every post with that hash tag. You might discover new people to follow if you like what they're talking about.
Here are some examples of what you could use.
Bit.ly - Since Twitter limits you to only 140 characters, you'll want to use the website bit.ly to shorten links you'd like to share. Open a new web browser and type bit.ly - no need for www or .com. Copy and paste the link you want to share into the box and it will automatically shorten it for you. Use this shortened link in Twitter for more room to write your thoughts.
Who to Follow
In Twitter, there is a 'Who to Follow' link at the top. Click that and type in the names of friends or organizations you'd like to follow.
Visit Twitter to sign up. Click the 'Profile' link at the top to write a short blurb about yourself so followers know who you are. Then get tweeting! In the coming months, we'll introduce more ways you can engage with the WOCNŽ and your followers on Twitter.

Featured Article from the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing
Wound Care: Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program
The September/October issue of the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing features an article on the prevention of pressure ulcers due to nonpayment for hospital acquired conditions from Medicare and Medicaid. The reimbursement guidelines given by these services are a huge push in developing and implementing prevention programs.
The article recommends facilities review current prevention programs and note the weaknesses. NYU Langone Medical Center developed two priorities to help fix its problems. Priority one was to improve data collection processes. Its data collection process was difficult and quite some times, inaccurate. Priority two was to engage perioperative services. Evidence shows that pressure ulcers can occur within 48-72 hours after surgery, making this a critical time to engage perioperative services.

Call for Research Proposals
The Center for Clinical Investigation
The Center for Clinical Investigation (CCI) of the Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) provides funding for research grants for Society members annually. The grants are funded through the generosity of WOCN's corporate partners and WOCN. CCI expands the existing research base for WOC nursing practice and facilitates WOC nurses to develop their roles as clinical investigators through funded research projects. CCI is pleased to announce the 2012 Call for Research Proposals for 2012 grants. If you are a member of WOCN, you are eligible to apply for one of the six grants! View the six grants available. International members are encouraged to apply. Please submit a Notice of Interest email anytime before the grant submission deadline to Linda Dahle, Program Associate (dahle081@umn.edu) if you are considering applying for a 2012 research grant. This is not a commitment, and you can notify CCI later if you change your mind. This allows CCI to send you any updates or resources to assist you.
The submission deadline for research grant proposals is January 30, 2012.
