Conference Safety Tips

We can't wait for you to join us in New Orleans for the 43rd WOCN Conference! We want to make sure you are safe when exploring the city so please read and adhere to the following safety tips.
  • Do not wear your nametag when you are out in public--it does advertise that you are a tourist and makes you more vulnerable to theft.
  • When venturing out into the town during time off, make sure you know where you are going. If you want to visit a particular part of town, ask hotel staff how to get to and from your destination. This way you do not get lost in a city you are not familiar with. If you do get turned around, the safest way to get back on track if you become lost is to find a place of business where you can get directions.
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Don't travel alone, travel in pairs or groups and make sure that someone in your group is alert. At times there can be drinking in New Orleans, be moderate with your drinking in the streets to ensure that you know where you are and where you are going.
  • Don't flash jewelry or cash, never carry excess cash on your person and carry your purse close to your body. You should also be especially careful when withdrawing cash from street corner ATM machines, use the ATMs in and near the hotel and in well-lighted areas.
  • If you're a runner or walker, ask someone at the hotel or convention center about popular running/walking routes. Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, overgrown trails and high-crime areas. Always trust your intuition. If you feel uncomfortable, get out of there.

Cycle For Scholarship Update...
Thermostat Ad

Twelve days and over 450 miles ago, Dr. Katherine Jeter embarked on her cross-country cycling tour to raise awareness of WOC nursing and scholarships for nurses interested in pursuing this specialty. We have come a long way toward our goal of building a lasting source of funding for the WOCN Society Foundations Educational Scholarship Program and we thank Dr. Jeter for the tremendous amount of sacrifice she is undergoing for the betterment of our nurses.

To this date, the WOCN's Cycling for Scholarship Campaign has raised $158,000 for the scholarship program. We are so close! With your generosity and support there is no doubt that we can reach our fundraising goal of $200,000 by the time Dr. Jeter rolls into St. Augustine, Fla. on April 28th 2011.

Pediatric Ostomy Care: Best Practice for Clinicians

Peds Ostomy Cover

The Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurses Society recognizes and supports best practices in ostomy care, involving both fecal and urinary stomas. In pediatric cases, factors such as the growth and development of the child and the need for training and support of parents and caregivers are also involved. This document addresses clinical issues as well as the need for awareness and sensitivity when dealing with an infant or child as patient, and the understandable concerns of parents and caregivers.

This document is free to members through the Member Center in the Library section.
