Resource Center 18 Silver Street, Waterville.
|
The Resource Center opened in Spring 2010. With the support of the Inland Hospital
Community Benefit Program Grant we were not only able to meet the goals
established for this grant funding, but exceed them! The furniture and educational materials will
be within our Resource Center for years to come to assist in responding to the
needs of those within our communities regarding sexual violence. Goals we achieved: · We were able to purchase furniture for
comfortable seating during workshops and visiting our lending library. · We provided printed materials for local schools
and colleges. · We were able to order new DVD movies and books
regarding healing for sexual assault survivors. · We were able to pay a small stipend to outside
consultants, many of whom donated their time, to conduct healing workshops for
sexual assault survivors during an 8-week workshop series. The recipients of
this 8-week series workshops said that it allowed them the opportunity to find
new avenues of healing and healthy living from the after affects of sexual
trauma. · We utilized the Resource Center for our "Take
Back The Night" event.

A Call for Volunteers!!!
|
Advocate Training - We will be offering an Advocate Training
starting in September. If you are
interested in becoming an advocate please call the office and we can start the
process.
We will be offering the
trainings in a little different format. In the past only individuals that wanted to
become advocates for the center were at the trainings. There are community members that want the
information but do not have the time to volunteer for our agency so, we will
now be offering the trainings to the community at large also. Contact Annmarie at annmarie.fitzpatrick@silentnomore.org or call her at 377-1010

educational services for our more rural communities, especially within our
newest territory-Somerset County and to build on the existing services we have

We will also, in the coming

see where it goes from there. Our Resource Center in Waterville will

A note from the EDUCATION team
|
Sean O'Connell: In the past 6 months, we've had the opportunity to
participate in some spectacular events in Somerset County. Madison High School
held "Core Values Day," Carrabec High School held "Diversity Day," and all 4th
grade students in the entire Skowhegan School District came to the "Rising
Stars Program." Spent some fantastic days at Clinton, Cornville, Canaan, and
Carrabec Community School talking personal body safety, sexual harassment,
media messages, and internet safety (and that's just the schools that start
with "c"). Margaret Chase, Mill Stream, and Warsaw Middle were also part of the
mix. Clinton Elementary and Lawrence Junior High have already scheduled more
presentations for the fall. Outreach efforts included our wildly successful nationwide
Break the Silence PSA Contest. Celebrity judges including survivor and advocate
Angela Shelton. The top videos are showcased at our "teen friendly" website www.silentnomore4teens.org.
There's also great potential for the winner PSA to be shown at CALCASA's
National Sexual Assault Conference this fall which would put our agency in the
national spotlight. Reestablished connections to Kennebec Valley Community
College are showing promise for programs in the fall. sean@silentnomore.org
Rachel Linton:
This year was an exciting year. I had the opportunity to visit new schools we
hadn't worked with in the past & strengthen current partnerships. Technology (& cell phone usage) continues
to be a hot topic. Most schools in my
catchment area have at least SOME technology training. In many schools, I held parents' seminars, as
well. It is so critical to partner with
parents to present a unified message to youth. Another highlight of the school
year was Personal Body Safety. We added
a "Personal Body Safety" Puppet show program for elementary children. Using
age-appropriate themes, puppets present a story that teaches children about
good, hurtful and confusing touches. This program is becoming very popular and
we expect to be very busy with it in the 2010-2011 school year. Adult Ed was another successful part of
the school year. We held classes in
Gardiner & Augusta (both semesters). In addition, Phoenix House continues to be an extremely enjoyable
segment of work. Although they face
great challenges, these students are genuinely eager to learn about themselves
and the world around them. This is such an exciting and rewarding piece of my
work as an educator. Last, I am very pleased to announce a
partnership between our agency and Gardiner Area High School. We have established office space & a
dedicated classroom for not only education, but one-on ones, and a new Peer
Helpers Group. We are also working on a
series of evening parents' presentations for the fall. I am so excited about this wonderful
collaboration. Rachel.linton@silentnomore.org
Kathleen Paradis: The "Personal Body
Safety" Program has really taken off in Waldo County. The guidance counselors and
teachers loved the puppets and are already talking about next year. One
of them is adding us to their district's curriculum. (SAD 3) We
also did a lot of bullying presentations in Waldo County for 4th and
5th graders. These elementary schools were located in
Northport, Searsport, Swanville, Morrill, Searsmont, Liberty, and 4 different
Belfast Schools.
I recently provided two
presentations at the Tri-District Conference at Mt. View - Sexual Assault and
Cyberbullying.
Schools I
presented in lately... Mt. View, Vassalboro, Troy Howard MS, Searsport HS, Messalonskee, Waterville HS, Winslow HS, Maine Children's
Home, Stepping Stones
(located on the old Hinckley campus... teen moms trying not to lose custody of
their kids)
Provided Garden Therapy in the Experiential Support Group at the New Resource Center in Waterville.
Summer Movie
Series was offered at the Resource Center but we've had no sign ups yet. We are working to develop new ways of reaching the community who would like to be part of this exciting program.
Thinking about
doing the "Half the Sky" book group this summer. Please contact me if you would be interested. kathleen.paradis@silentnomore.org or 660-6277Click below to see our fabulous Teen Website! |

Sexual Assault Response Team Updates |

The last few months have been very busy in the SART
department. Currently there are almost
20 survivors in our 4 counties accessing our services as they make their way
through the criminal justice system. We
also continue to provide support for the loved ones of the survivors. Needless to say there have been hours of
phone calls and travel throughout our catchment area. I have made several new contacts with the other
professional agencies that make up our multi-disciplinary team and that has
been great. In early June the center invited Dr. Davis Lisak to come to
Augusta and provide a training on the "Undetected Non-Stranger Rapist" and the
"Neurobiology of Trauma". The training
was well attended by professionals from all over the state and the response was
very positive. Kudos to Jenn Howe for
putting it all together. I attended the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner training,
also in June, and was very impressed. Polly Campbell of the Attorney General's Office organizes and presents
this training twice a year. It is open
to medical professionals as well as law enforcement and advocates. The curriculum is comprehensive and Polly
invites experts from a variety of disciplines to come in and present,
including; the crime lab, attorneys, law enforcement, victims compensation,
Spurwink and many others. We also have
three new SAFEs in training in our catchment area. The plans for the Child Advocacy Program continue to push
forward. We are taking members of the
multi-disciplinary team to New Hampshire in August to tour three Children's Advocacy Centers. We are hoping to be inspired and educated on
the different models in order to assists us in our decisions about the best way
for our community to move forward. Thanks to all out there who support our center
and the coordinated community response to ending sexual violence and better
serving the survivors in our catchment
area. Enjoy the rest of the summer!!! - Meg Hatch megan.hatch@silentnomore.org

Support Groups
|
Support Groups are a wonderful way to start the healing
process after an assault. Being in a
group setting will help you to reconnect to the community around you in a safe
and supportive way. If you are
interested in working in a group please call Annmarie at 377-1010.
Support Groups Offered: T.R.E.M. - This is a 12 month psycho-educational group for
individuals that are beginning to work through past trauma. Courage to Heal Workgroup - This is a 33 week psycho-educational
workgroup for individuals that would like to make a change in their lives. The work is very rewarding and supportive in
a group of individuals that have some similar experiences in their past.
Experiential
Group - This is a group that offers opportunity to experience activities
that a survivor may not feel comfortable
doing outside of a support group setting. We just completed an 8 week group with a lot of fun and success. The group was given the opportunity to join
in on the following: Week 1 - Nutrition & Wellness with
Christina Ray of Inland Hospital Week 2 - Art Therapy with Robin Miller Week 3 - Expressive Dance with Kari
Luehman Week 4 - Gardening - getting back to
the earth with Kathleen Paradis Week 5 - African Drumming with Alfred
Lund Week 6 - Restorative Yoga with Tracey Blake-Bell Week 7 - Healthy Body Healthy Touch
with Meg Hatch Week 8 - Makeover's by the Empire
School of Beauty Thank you
goes to all the providers. You
unselfishly gave to individuals that may have never had these experiences
without you.
