Welcome to The Coaching Compass Newsletter!
As the year quickly comes to an end, I want to thank all of you who have read my Newsletters & Blogs and allowed me to work with you and your teams.  2011 was an exciting year filled with many challenges, changes and opportunity. In this last Newsletter of the the year, I am encouraging you and your teams to "lend a hand" to others and to"give yourself a hand" for a job well done. Have a wonderful holiday season!  Anita

Training Activity
 Give Others A Helping Hand

This month I decided that rather than give you a training exercise or team building activity, I would suggest that you look at volunteerism as a vehicle for teamwork. Volunteering and giving back to your community is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season.  One does not have to look far to find deserving groups, projects or people in need. Even the selection process of what you will do and who will be the benefactor can inspire team camaraderie & communication.

Below are a few web links to organizations that match people and organizations up volunteer projects.

Or if you prefer, you can identify your own "Give Back Project" with a passion approach. Assemble your team to discuss volunteerism.  Find out what types of charities or organizations they are passionate about.  Discuss the skills and talents your team can provide.  Create small teams to research and explore opportunities.  Once the research is done, have team members present the project(s) they have uncovered.  The last step is having the group decide which project s) they want to participate in.  This can be quite a challenge when so many good options are available ... but allow your group to work together to reach consensus.

During the course of the project, be sure to take photos and document the experience. Make time for the post project conversations. The discussions after the project add to the richness of the experience and provide a venue to highlight team take-aways.

Give Yourself A Hand!

As we approach the end of the year, it is a common practice to look forward and begin planning goals for 2012.  Before jumping into planning mode or making those new years' resolutions, take a moment to appreciate all that you have accomplished this year.  Below is a short exercise to get you thinking.

Starting in January of 2011 and going through to December, month by month, list what you are most proud of. To help you get started, consider the following:

¨     Actions taken

¨     Goals Achieved

¨     Shifts in thinking

¨     Risks Taken

¨     People you have impacted positively

¨     Support you have provided

¨     Projects Accomplished

¨     Your Proudest Accomplishment

Remember, nothing is too small or too great to add to your list.  Once you have completed your 2011 personal accomplishment inventory, take a moment to revel in your good fortune.

Consider having everyone on your team participate in the same inventory process.  Then come together as a group and have individuals share the highlights on the list.  This is a wonderful opportunity for team members to appreciate the success of the coworkers and recognize them for jobs well done. In addition it provides a forum for individuals to take credit for their own positive contributions.
