The Teamwork Tango
Purpose:
Participants learn that both Leaders and Followers have a responsibility to each other for the success of any endeavor. This is a great activity to use when:
- Individuals don't recognize the role they play making the Leader and/or the team successful.
- The group is expecting too much from the leader.
- You want a physical exercise that highlights team work and gets the group engaged.
Preparation:
Purchase light weight wooden dowels 3 to 4 feet in length. Have one for every 2 people in the group. Another option is using water noodles (pool toy) or taping together several cardboard tubes from paper towels.
Delivery:
- Ask your participants to find a partner to pair up with.
 - Then ask pairs to face each other and place the dowel between their stomachs (end to end). Placement can vary based on the height of 2 people and comfort.
- The object of this exercise is for the pair to keep their stick from falling to the ground while walking. Instruct one partner to take on the role of "leader" and lead their partner around room for 3 minutes.
- Then switch roles - the other partner now becomes "the leader" for 3 minutes.
Debrief:
- How much pressure did you use when you were leading?
- Was the pressure different when you were leading vs. following?
- Did any team drop their dowel? What happened? What do you think caused it?
- What responsibility did the Leader have for the success of the walk around?
- What responsibility did the Follower have for the success of the walk around?
- How does this experience relate to you as a leader or follower back on the job?
- Feel free to add questions... especially if you add a challenge variation.
Comfort Tip: If the dowel feels to hard , feel free to soften the ends by attaching a cusion of some sort ( tape on cotton balls, wrap fabric to the ends.)
Challenge Variations:
*Create a maze or path that the pairs will have to navigate through. *Do activity blind folded *Only allow leader to speak (follower must remain silent). This allows you to highlight the importance of clear communication from people in leadership roles.
