"Tricks of the Train" Serious Fun & Games for Engaging Training January 2009

Happy New Year! 2009 is already off to a swift and exciting start! Each year, we all go through the same old dry process of goal setting for the year; creating MBO's, Action Plans, Deliverable Worksheets etc. This year, why not try something different, creative and effective. Vision Boards are all the rage these days. Whether you've read "The Secret", studied the laws of attraction or heard about it on Oprah - vision boards are a great tool for getting focus and clarity on what you want as well as creating the energy and opportunity to actualize what you visualize. Creating a vision board for 2009 can provide your staff an opportunity to not only set goals but actually visualize and feel the results of success. It's simple, easy and fun! Below are some simple steps to help you get going.

Picture This! Creating your own a Vision Board for 2009
Purpose: To set goals for the New Year. This exercise may be purely business oriented, or may include some personal goals as well, such as life balance, health and personal development.
Group Size: This exercise may be done as a group, or assigned to staff members to do independently.
Preparation
Here are the basic supplies you will need:
- Large Poster Boards or Foam Core Boards for a more durability. One for each person
- Scissors
- Tape, glue or rubber cement
- Assorted magazines, business journals, newspapers and any other items that might contain pictures and words that could depict goals.
- Colorful Markers, pens & pencils
Instructions: Ask each employee to create their own personal vision board for 2009 by cutting out images and words that depict their vision for the new year and pasting onto their board. Depending on you goals for them, you may instruct them to include certain topics - For example: Sales, Service, Education, Personal Growth, Management, Communication Skills and Product Development etc. Or if you would like, you can leave the content entirely up to the individual.
Debrief: Once participants have completed there boards, bring them together as a group to discuss their goals with the rest of the team (if appropriate). This allows individuals to talk through their goals with the team and creates more accountability for the individual. Also, please note that this exercise can be a precursor to a more structured goal format, like MBO's etc.
After the meeting, ask that they each put their vision boards up in their office. By posting their boards on their office wall, it serves as a reminder of what they want to achieve in 2009.
After 6 months, come back together as a group or meet with each person individually and see what visions have been actualized. You may be surprised to see how much success has already occurred.
