The Coaching Compass
"Tricks of the Train"
Serious Fun & Games for Engaging Training

August 2008
Summer Greetings!

Have you ever heard the song, "I Don't Like Mondays?"  Feelings of anxiety or apprehension around Monday Morning is not uncommon.. Monday is the traditionally the most dreaded day in the workplace.  Sometimes it's due to people not liking their job or not
liking their personal time off to end. Sometimes it's the result of feeling pressure to catch up on something you were
unable to finish, starting a daunting project or dealing with  interpersonal issues.  Suffice to say, for many, Mondays are not their favorite day of the week.  So in the interest of raising morale and promoting motivation and enthusiasm, I wanted to dedicate this month's "training game" section to ideas for creating Motivational Mondays.

Motivational Monday Ideas

Monday Morning Raffle - Hand out raffle tickets as employees arrive and pick winners at a specified time.  Prizes can be as small as $5 Starbucks cards and movie tickets to more substantial prizes like $25 Gift Certificates or even IPods if your budget permits.  This will definitely give people something to look forward to on Monday morning.

Fun Facts E-Quiz- Throughout the day send out questions via email that pertain to your business, service standards, products etc.  The 1st person to respond correctly wins a prize.  These can be very small prizes such as candy bars, items with company logo, etc.  Or you can set it up like a competition where people get points for correct answers.  The person with the most points at the end of the day wins.

Service Bingo - Employees receive a bingo card with a lettered number on the back (example B30) when they enter the building.  Every time an employee has a positive interaction with a co-worker, that coworker will share their number and if
it is on the employee's card, the coworker will initial the bingo box.  The 1st person to get 5 lettered numbers across, diagonal or vertical gets BINGO.  You decide the prize, but the big win is interdepartmental communication and internal service!

Coffee Talk Mondays - Set up an area for coffee & donuts or whatever you'd like to serve and allow employees the opportunity to stop by get a bite and chat about their week- ends.  Obviously, depending on the nature of your business and size of your organization, you may need to schedule your staff and limit the time frame.  The idea is to give your staff an opportunity to mingle, team build and create an atmosphere of fun and positive energy.

Do something different every week.  Challenge your staff to come up with Motivational Monday ideas.  Make it a game in itself.

* I was 1st introduced to "Dreaded Monday" concept by a friend and colleague of mine, Mark Byrne, who is well known for his book, entitled "What Your Employees Really Want From You".  This book is filled with some great information on how to respect your employees, motivate your staff, boost morale and reduce turnover.  Check out his website at www.whatyouremployeeswant.com for more information.

 You Tube Meets
CREW TUBE

Spotlight your team in this funny video adventure.  Teams will be tasked to create either a humorous musical parody or comedy vignette ala MAD TV/Saturday Night Live Style.  The theme of the videos will relate to the organizations culture and/or current reality.  Participants will be responsible for creating the script, acting, producing, directing and shooting their film. This activity taps into all areas of teamwork from creativity to cooperation.  When was the last time your team had a good laugh?  Maybe it's time for a little humor!
