The Coaching Compass
"Tricks of the Train"
Serious Fun & Games for Engaging Training

May 2008

Greetings!
In the working world, there are many situations that require us to speak publicly or present ideas and concepts to others.  Whether you are a salesperson making a pitch to a client or a computer analyst lobbying management for better equipment at a staff meeting, we all can benefit from mastering the art of presenting.  This months activity allows your team to play and practice their speaking skills in an entertaining and effective format.  Introducing  the latest trend in training which mixes skill, practice and humor...
Power Point Karaoke!

Presentation Skills with a Twist!

Power Point Karaoke
was invented back in 2005 by a German artist group and was so successful that it has taken off as a new trend at techie conferences.  In a typical event, a few brave people volunteers to "present" a random deck of slides pulled off the Web, or borrowed from friends or employers. The audience laughs, cheers, and yells out suggestions as the presenters gamely struggle to link one slide to the next, transforming something that probably started life as a tedious corporate monologue into a  enaging improvisational presentation.

Purpose:  Power Point Karaoke is a great technique for improving presentation skills and overcoming speaking fears.  Since the process is done in a comical format, the individual's stress level is reduced.  It is an activity that inspires creativity and provides an opportunity for participants to learn to go with the flow and adapt to the many unknowns that occur when presenting to others.

Preparation:
1. First decide whether you want to do serious or funny presentations.
2. Find or make the presentations (the Internet is a good source) - choose training / PowerPoint topics that are not entirely foreign to your group.
3. Acquire the following materials:
    * Projector
    * Laptop
    * Timer
    * Screen or white wall to project upon
    * 5 to 15 short PowerPoint presentations
4. Create an evaluation card that allows the audience to rate the presenter on the following delivery skills: eye contact, tone of voice, enthusiasm, body language, believability, effectiveness and use of filler words (ah, um, like etc).

Delivery
1. Have Presenters sign up on a list prior to the activity.
2. Have Presenters come to the front of the room when their name is called.
3. A presentation is put up on screen. The presenter DOES NOT get to look at it prior to it being projected on screen.
4.The timer goes off and the presenter starts giving the presentation. The presenter should pretend that this is his or her own presentation and try to actually give it, not necessarily make fun of it, or just blast through it. Presenters should take their time and read the slides as if they really want to communicate the information.
5. The Presenter continues presenting for 5 minutes (or until you run out of slides or decide you've had enough)
6. Audience applauds.

Debrief
Depending on your goals and time frame, feedback from audience may be shared during the presentation portion (at the end of each presentation) or saved till everyone has had a chance to perform.  Be sure to have the audience share feedback in a positive and productive fashion.  During the feedback portion, the facilitator should interject questions to the group.
Below are a few questions that will get the conversation moving in the right direction.
  • How difficult was it to present a topic you were not prepared for?
  • How important is being prepared?
  • How important is your body language and eye contact when presenting? Why?
  • Was it difficult to avoid using filler words? Why
  • What was the most challenging aspect of this exercise to you?
Have Fun!  For more info on PowerPoint Karaoke, google it on the internet.  There is suprisingly quite a bit of info available.

Inspired Customer Service

The Coaching Compass and True Track Life Coaching have pooled their resources to create Inside Track Performance, an organization dedicated to enhancing employee service potential from the inside out.  We take a new approach to the old concern of improving customer service.
Service training programs are a good booster shot for improving service and raising awareness, however, they rarely produce long lasting, sustainable or significant results.  Skills retention, reinforcement and individual involvement tend to be the missing ingredient. Customer Service Coaching Circles create a unique learning platform which combines group coaching techniques and solid service training principles.  Coaching Circles are made up of 8-16 service employees.  The employees in the group meet two times per month for 2 hour sessions over the course of 3 months (or longer).

  The goal of each session is to:
·    Create a forum for discussion around real life service issues
·    Learn and reinforce new skills
·    Acknowledge individual strengths
·    Take responsibility for creating an exceptional experiences for the customer
·    Empower participants to make their job more engaging and satisfying

Employees will sharpen their focus, enhance skills and deepen their knowledge and service awareness.  Let us rejuvenate your company's culture and improve the quality of your service professionals with our Inspired Customer Service Series.
