WHAT A GUY!
Vancouver Island Conservation Champion

Guy MontyThe Nature Trust was delighted to honour Guy Monty with a 2009 Conservation Champion Award on March 28. Over 75 friends, family and colleagues attended a special tribute dinner in Nanoose on Vancouver Island.

Guy has become one of BC's top birders and has greatly contributed to The Nature Trust's conservation projects. He has conducted inventories at numerous sites including weekly bird data at the Nanaimo River Estuary for a complete year. A tireless volunteer, Guy has led many nature tours for The Nature Trust: to the Cluxewe salt marsh and estuary, Robson Bight, Englishman River, Craig Creek, and throughout the Parksville-Qualicum Wildlife Management Area as part of the Brant Wildlife Festival.

In addition, he has been our volunteer property warden at the Nanaimo River Estuary, Buttertubs Marsh and he regularly visits other Nature Trust properties across BC. For over 12 years, Guy has freely given his time to help us steward conservation lands. Thank you, Guy!

IN HONOUR OF BERT BRINK
Bert Brink Wildlife Management Area

Bert Brink Wildlife Management AreaOn April 13, the McGillivray Creek Wildlife Management Area along the Fraser River near Chilliwack was renamed the Bert Brink Wildlife Management Area.

"We are extremely pleased with this opportunity to recognize Dr. Bert Brink, a long standing director of The Nature Trust and someone who is dearly missed. Bert was a leading voice in conserving the Fraser River. The Bert Brink Wild Management Area is a fitting tribute to a man who tirelessly reminded us how important nature is to our well being," said Robin Wilson, Past Chair of The Nature Trust of BC.

The Wildlife Management Area is 915 hectares in total including two Nature Trust properties. The WMA features floodplain forest and marsh as well as gravel bars which provide habitat for fish, particularly white sturgeon, and spawning grounds for pink and chum salmon. The area also provides habitat for birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals such as coyote, deer and beaver.
