 Legislative Committee Report

Capitol HillTHE NFRW LEGISLATIVE DAY AT THE CAPITOL WAS A ROUSING SUCCESS THIS YEAR!  WE HAD OVER 60 REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS STOP BY TO VISIT WITH THE 200 NFRW MEMBERS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY.  IN ADDITION, WE HAD A 45-MINUTE VISIT FROM SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER.  HE WAS GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO STOP BY AND TALK WITH US ABOUT THE CURRENT, MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES; AND THEN HE STAYED   TAKE QUESTIONS!  THIS WAS A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE 80,000 MEMBERS OF NFRW NATIONWIDE.

DURING OUR LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE MEETING BACK AT THE HOTEL, MUCH WAS DISCUSSED ABOUT THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITY FOR EACH AND EVERY STATE TO MAKE VOTER ID REQUIRED - AND TO MAKE IT AN AMENDMENT TO OUR STATE CONSTITUTIONS.  WE WERE REMINDED THAT JUST AS SOON AS DEMOCRATS TAKE CONTROL OF OUR STATE LEGISLATURES (AND THEY WILL AT SOME POINT IN TIME), THEY WILL OVERTURN ANY VOTER ID LAW WE PASS NOW.  THUS, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT EACH STATE MAKE THE VOTER ID REQUIREMENT  AN AMENDMENT TO ITS CONSTITUTION.

FOR THOSE STATES WITH DEMOCRAT MAJORITIES IN THEIR LEGISLATURES, THE CITIZEN PETITION IS THE WAY TO GET THIS ISSUE ON THEIR BALLOT.  EACH STATE HAS DIFFERENT LAWS FOR GETTING QUESTIONS ON THEIR BALLOTS, SO YOU SHOULD CONTACT YOUR STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND/OR SECRETARY OF STATE TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT YOU MUST DO TO GET AN ISSUE ON THE BALLOT.

JUST RECENTLY, THE NC FEDERATION COLLECTED THOUSANDS OF SIGNATURES ON PETITIONS - AND THEN PRESENTED THE PETITIONS TO THEIR LEGISLATURES.   IT IS NOW IN THE NC LEGISLATURE, AND IS EXPECTED TO PASS SOON!

IN DEMOCRAT-CONTROLLED STATES, THE JOB MAY BE HARDER, BUT VOTER ID LAW CAN STILL BE ACCOMPLISHED.  IT CAN BE DONE BY EDUCATING DEMOCRATS AND INDEPENDENTS ON THE VERY REAL FEAR (AND POSSIBILITY) OF SOME GROUP OF PEOPLE CASTING THOUSANDS OF FRAUDULENT VOTES - AND ELECTING THEIR CANDIDATE - RATHER THAN THE CANDIDATE FAVORED BY THE PEOPLE.

OUR SECOND PRIORITY THIS YEAR IS VOTING DOWN ANY BILLS THAT CALL FOR A NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE POLICY.  THIS WOULD DO AWAY WITH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE, WHICH OUR FOUNDERS SO BRILLIANTLY DESIGNED FOR US IN THE CONSTITUTION.  WITH AN NPV POLICY, PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES WOULD FOCUS ON THE EIGHT OR NINE MOST POPULOUS STATES (MOST OF WHICH ARE BLUE STATES), AND TOTALLY IGNORE THE REST OF THE STATES.   THESE STATES WOULD HAVE POWER FAR DISPROPORTIONATE FROM WHAT OUR FOUNDERS WANTED.

THIS LEGISLATION IS QUIETLY BEING PROPOSED IN ALL 50 STATES.  ONE OTHER NOTE OF IMPORTANCE:  IF YOUR STATE HAS ALREADY PASSED THE NPV VOTE, AT ANY TIME, GO BACK AND REPEAL IT.  IF NOT, 25 YEARS FROM NOW, IF THE NPV ADVOCATES ARE SUCCESSFUL, THEY MIGHT HAVE THEIR 36-STATE MAJORITY TO MAKE THIS AN AMENDMENT TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION.

OUR THIRD PRIORITY THIS YEAR IS TO DEFEAT THE CALL FOR A CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION.  WERE WE TO HAVE A CON-CON, WE WOULD OPEN UP EVERY SINGLE WORD, EVERY SINGLE LINE AND EVERY SINGLE AMENDMENT TO OUR CONSTITUTION TO CHANGE OR ELIMINATION.  (FOR EXAMPLE, REPEAL THE 20TH AMENDMENT LIMITING OUR PRESIDENT TO TWO TERMS.  REPEAL IT, AND WE COULD GET A DICTATOR FOREVER!)

SOME REPUBLICANS, FOR REASONS THAT DEFY LOGIC, SEEM TO THINK THAT CONSERVATIVES WOULD RUN A CON-CON; AND THAT WE COULD HAVE OUR CONSERVATIVE VIEWS BE PARAMOUNT.  THE OPPOSITE IS MORE LIKELY TRUE:  THAT LIBERALS WOULD RUN THE CON-CON - AND THEN WHERE WOULD WE BE?????

PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY OF THE EAGLE FORUM IS A HUGE OPPONENT OF A CON-CON, AND YOU CAN FIND MORE INFORMATION ON HER WEBSITE.  THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE MUST OPPOSE.  FIND OUT ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR STATE.

FINALLY, WE NEED TO ENACT THE "CHILD INTERNET PROTECTION ACT" AKA THE PUBLIC LIBRARY INTERNET FILTER BILL.  THIS BILL WOULD PREVENT CHILDREN FROM HAVING ACCESS TO PORNOGRAPHY AT ALL OF OUR TAXPAYER-FUNDED PUBLIC LIBRARIES.  BELIEVE IT OR NOT, LIBRARY ADMINISTRATORS OPPOSE

THIS BILL - USING THE 1ST AMENDMENT AS THEIR DEFENSE.  ACCESS TO PORNOGRAPHY SHOULD NOT BE PAID FOR AND ENCOURAGED BY THE TAXPAYERS.

IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO TRY TO DO EVERYTHING, BUT I ENCOURAGE EVERY CLUB TO DO AS MUCH AS THEY CAN.  PERHAPS GETTING PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER TO FORM A COMMITTEE FOR ONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE ISSUES, AND WORK ON THAT ISSUE DILIGENTLY.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOUR STATES ARE DOING TO PROMOTE OR OBSTRUCT THE ABOVE ISSUES.

GOOD LUCK AND KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT!
