Lakefest '09: The Heart of Oakland Shows its Heart
2 full days of music, skating, arts and crafts, food, kids' activities, and more!!! |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Oakland, CA) -- Thursday, July 23, 2009
-- Geographically as well as socially, the Lakeshore District
represents the heart of Oakland. The neighborhoods surrounding the
picturesque Lake Merritt are overflowing with cultural diversity, and
Lakeshore's unique shops, restaurants, lounges, cafes and bars are both
popular shopping and entertainment destinations.
From the
historic Grand Lake Theatre to the weekend Farmers Market to favorite
community hangouts like Peet's, the Burrito Shop, and Arizmendi (just
to name a few), to boogie nights at the Serenader, Easy Lounge, and
Kingman's Lucky Lounge, there's just too much happening in Lakeshore
not to celebrate.
With that in mind, Oakland Events presents the Second Annual Lakefest, a summertime street fair and community festival happening August 1st and 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Building on the successful first edition of the event, which attracted
over 20,000 attendees, this year's Lakefest offers fun, food,
entertainment and activities galore for the entire family - with both
free admission and free parking at one of two municipal parking lots..
Among the many exciting attractions are more than 100 artisan and
vendor booths, a live music stage, Gourmet Food Booths, the Lakeshore
Merchant Sidewalk Sale, a kid's fun zone, art, street performers, a
Green Living Expo and, on Saturday, the ever-popular Grand Lake Farmers
Market.
One especially cool addition to this year's event is
"Hood Games by tha Lake" on Sunday, August 2nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This youth-oriented urban sporting event turns Splash Pad Park into a
skatepark, with live music provided by Youth Movement Records artists
and artists from Roots and Branches' Roots & Branches Sound System
Vol. 3 -- for which this event marks the official record release party.
A
diverse range of musical performers-the majority of whom hail from
Oakland or the East Bay--also promises to be a big draw at this year's
Lakefest. Saturday's confirmed artist lineup include: Rankin Scroo (Urban Reggae); Luv Fyah & 7th Street Band (Roots Reggae); Youssoupha Sidibe (Senegalese World Beat); Jungle Shack (Latin-style Mash-Ups); Jesse Brewster (Rock); and King Cab (Alternative Country). Sunday's lineup is just as hot, with Pep Love, Opio & A-Plus of Hieroglyphics (Hip-Hop); Kev Choice Ensemble (Hip-Hop/Jazz/Soul); Shabaz (World Beat/Hip-Hop/Sufi); The Real Tom Thunder (Rock); and Fear & Fancy (Hip-Hop).
For
regular Lakeside-goers and local residents, Lakefest '09 is a dream
come true, as their neighborhood hangout becomes THE place to be in
Oakland for two exciting days of fun, food, and entertainment.
First-timers are invited to experience the heart of the city first-hand
and see for themselves why the Lakeshore District has it goin' on!!!
