Leather and Orthotic Pads Available From Guard Industries
You may be aware of the specialty plastics and other materials that Guard Industries distributes to the Orthotic, Prosthetic and Pedorthic industries.  What you may not be aware of is that they also have an extensive offering of leather hides and pads used as components for modifications of footwear and foot orthoses.
While the leather may be suitable for many uses, several of the hides are particularly suited for use in the O&P field.  For instance they have both the lining and upper leather used in popular gauntlet AFO's.  Other hides include various weights of:
  • Garment Cowsides
  • Kidskin
  • Moulding Leather
  • Ortho Brace
  • Several Grades of Linings

New Featured Hides Available - Buy all five colors for a special offer
Currently a new collection of calf skins are being featured.  These full hides are imported from India and are soft, smooth and very clean.  The average size is 12 to 15 square feet each and the light weight (2.5-3.0 ounce) makes them suitable for many uses, especially for use in custom made footwear.  Five nice colors are currently available.

Orthotic Pads
Longitudinal Pads             Metatarsal Pads                  Metatarsal  Bars         Heel Wedges/Cushions

The second category includes pads for modifying and customizing footwear and foot orthoses.  For firm support the molded rubber products are appropriate to use.  This can be either genuine or synthetic rubber and is molded into longitudinal arch pads, metatarsal pads, met bars and level wedges.

For softer correction the skived sponge rubber is the correct choice.  These also included longitudinal arch pads, metatarsal pads, met bars and split heel ovals.  Printable size charts for these pads showing actual size are available on the website www.guardmfg.com or click here for printable size charts.  Samples will be sent to anyone requesting them.

Green Tip For Fall
Fall's here and leaves will begin to take over your yard.  Landfill space is shrinking and burning them is dangerous to our health, so try mulching your leaves and placing them in garden beds to improve the soil's quality.

Tip Of The Month (Cont): Lamination StandLamination Stand
The lamination stands are also simple to make.  A 20x20" 3/16" thick section of steel is the base, with a 2" pipe flange bolted to the center sealed with duct seal.  Screwed into the flange is a 40" section of 2" pipe with a 3/8" pipe screwed into the side of it bout 20" up.  The 3/8" pipe has a gate valve attached and is connected to a vacuum source.  At the top of the 2" to 1" pipe is a reducer that is drilled a taped with for two 3/8" allen cap screws.  The screws tighten on the cast to hold it in place during lamination.  in the top of the reducer is a 3" section of 1" pipe that stabilizes the cast.  Bolted in one corner of the base is a 1/2" pipe flange with a 8 foot section of 1/2" pipe.  Connected to the 1/2" pipe is a 90 degree elbow with another 12" section of 1/2" pipe that holds a clip over the center of the stand to hold the PVA bag or funnel during lamination.  This stand allows the user to walk around the entire lamination.  Attaching the bag clip to a weight and pulley allows the user to keep an even pull on the bag and adjust for different height laminations.

By removing the reducer, shortening the 2" pipe, removing the 1/2" pipe assemble from the lamination stand and adding the foot pedal in place of the gate valve you can turn the lamination stand into a great stand alone blister forming station.
