Dear :
School's almost out. Can you believe it? Around here, we're getting ready for summer school and swimming lessons. Should be a busy month.
There will be a lot of changes to Dawn Michelle Photography, which I will be announcing in a later e-newsletter, so please stay tuned. Some exciting new products and other big changes. The first is a new logo, which is at the bottom of this e-mail.
Another change is that I will be adding newsletters that do not have articles about photography. Instead, they will be honoring clients I've photographed. I don't have a title for those yet but they won't be called Click! so keep an eye out for them. They will start coming soon.
If you'd like daily photo tips, I send them on Twitter daily @dawnmphoto. Also, I've set up a Dawn Michelle Photography fan page on Facebook. I will post portraits and other business news there. Would love to "see" you on both.
Have a great June!

A Photographer's Vacation Schedule
My husband and I love to go to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the summer. There is so much I miss about
the place when I'm not there - the cool mornings, the delicious New Mexican
cuisine, the art galleries, the vanilla ice cream-stuffed crepes topped with
chocolate genache in the café on Burro Alley, the artists, the mountains, and,
of course, the architecture.
I always bring my camera with me, too. There are many subjects to photograph there; seems I never tire of it. I am telling you this story not so you will
sorry for my husband, but to give you a glimpse of how we travel together, how we get to enjoy our getaways yet still come away with some great pictures
that help me remember the experience when I'm stuck in the Dallas heat. And my husband never complains.
- First, I always take my camera
equipment on the plane with me and stow it under the seat in front of
me.
- There are only a couple of hours a day
I will photograph. I will get
up at about dawn and head over to Canyon Road or wherever else I want to
photograph and photograph about an hour after sunrise. I do not get up early every day.
- I do not bother photographing during
the harsh daylight. It is
liberating to leave the camera behind for most of the day.
- I scout photo locations during the
harsh light of the daylight hours and sometimes at night.
- We eat an early dinner (better anyway
because everything is less crowded) and then photograph during the golden
hour before sunset. These
locations may be different from the early morning locations because the
light is coming from the opposite direction.
- Last
trip, I really enjoyed some
nighttime photography. There
was not a single other photographer out, which surprised me.
Yes, I used a tripod and, yes, I
did get "busted" by a bartender across the street at a bar I was photographing. I showed him what I was doing, had a great
bodyguard (my husband), and the nice bartender decided that we were not up to
something evil and he left us alone.
(Apparently, someone had used images of the bar in a not-so-nice manner
and he was paranoid about it.)
- Sometimes
I take my laptop so I can store pictures on it and check e-mail if I need
to but memory cards are relatively
cheap these days, so it would be much easier to carry extras.
- Beware when you are photographing
buildings that you can get run off rather quickly if you are
photographing a government building.
Also, when photographing someone's personal property, you should
get a property release from them if you intend to sell the images.
Here are 3 photographs from our last trip: I find this schedule gives us a lot more freedom during most of the day. I hope it helps your family, too!
