Back to Football Friday
| |
The United Way and NFL are teaming up to get schools and businesses geared up for the fast approaching football season (fast, like the GB Packer's first preseason game is this Saturday!). Back to Football Friday will also tackle the area of health and wellness. This celebration can take place anytime between September 10th-17th. Show your team spirit and be eligible to win a party sponsored by the NFL, and schools have a chance to win a $10,000 health and wellness grant. TOUCHDOWN! Announce this to your school or business, and you could end up with the winning play! Find more information in the playbook. Get ready to rumble with the United Way and NFL. And, GO Health And Wellness GO! |

As the heat of the summer days begin to turn into the crispness of fall, I'm reminded of getting ready for Back-to-School shopping. Even though my dad was self-employed and single-handedly raising five children, I remember each one of us, having something new to wear to school on that first day. Looking back at those days, I know how blessed we were. Not ever child can say that, but many can in Oshkosh. Our community is a caring community; people coming together to help one another. With your help, we were able to collect more than 4,500 items during our "Stuff-the-Bus" promotion. People donated items at our bus (compliments of Cerebral Palsy of Mideast WI) which was located in the Shopko parking lot or through the many companies that held on-site collection projects. These items have been donated to the Back-to-School Fair, and on August 12th will help to provide 800 children with school supplies, a new set of clothes, and personal hygiene items.
Another thing I remember is that my family valued reading. Growing up (years ago) in a small town in Northern WI, I was able to ride my bike or walk to our local library whenever I wanted to. And, while I don't remember my dad having the time to read to me, my older bother and sister did, so I too gained a love for reading. Again, I was blessed! When it came time for me to begin 1st grade, I was ready.
How can we be assured that all children are ready by the time they begin school? When is the right time to begin learning? The answer is, as early as possible. Our United Way supports early learning because we've learned that 46% of kindergarteners enter school without the necessary skills to succeed. That's unacceptable. So what can be done to change this statistic? Interaction! Affection! A simple act, such as reading for as little as 10 minutes a day to your child, could have a lasting affect on the development of your child's brain. Did you know...
· By the age of 2 ½, a child's brain has already grown to 85% of an adults, and 90% by the age of three?
· Children, who are not played with or touched, may have 20-30% smaller brains than children who are receiving these types of stimulation?
And, when it comes to early learning, size matters. A smaller brain equals a lesser amount of retention and capability which then translates into a decreased chance of success by the time school comes around. Every word, every hug, every shake of a rattle, could mean a higher success rate and life-long lasting benefits for your child.
The Oshkosh Area United Way is part of the Early Learning Collaboration Committee of Oshkosh to educate the community on the importance of early learning. On Friday, October 15, ELCCO will be holding an Early Learning Economic Summit to educate area businesses on the importance of investing in early learning. I hope you can join us. Another way that the Oshkosh Area United Way is involved in early learning is by participating in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, which supplies children birth to five with one book a month, free of charge.
So finally, why is this so important? According to the Committee of Economic Development, "investing in education of America's youngest learners has emerged as one of the most promising ways to help strengthen the future economic and fiscal position of our states and nation." That's pretty powerful stuff! |
