Wishing You a Healthy 2010!
|
Greetings!
Many of you have heard me say that "Health is a choice". Yet, sometimes it seems I am either preaching to the choir or hitting a brick wall. Because I am passionate about reclaiming our responsibility of our own health, I thought I would start the new year off with a few of my favorite things. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

What I am Reading . . . Lilipoh Magazine
|
One field of holistic medicine I have been studying for awhile now is Anthroposophical Medicine. Long word for really a way to incorporate the Mind, Body and Will. This form of healing is based on what is called the Threefold Human Being. In health this would mean paying attention to that which allows us to Think, Feel and Will (do).
Thinking - Head/nerves/senses, cave, hard on the outside (skull) and soft on the inside (brain), no movement, nervous system, Eagle, priest, temple and wisdom. Feeling - Chest/lung/heart, cage, both hard and soft, rhythmical movement, rhythmic system, Lion, warrior, castle and courage. Willing - Stomach/intestines/muscles/limbs, bag, soft on the outside (muscles) and hard on the inside (bones), strong movement, digestive system, Bull, farmers, hut and hard working.
When this threefold human being is in balance all the systems are working together. If you would like to learn more here is a link to one of my favorite magazines, Lilipoh. Their newest issue focused on FEAR including the fear of healing or that our body needs extra protection (like during flu season). Here is a link to the article "What Are Epidemics?"

Self-Care for the New Year
|
Winter time can be cold (especially in New York) and dark. This is the time our body wants to slow down and yet, everyone is pushing us to make resolutions to do MORE. Self-care for the new year is about you rediscovering what you need at this time to feel good.
- Good Sleep - This is absolutely top on my list for self-care. Sleep in needed to heal the nervous system. Your bedroom should be a haven to sleep and relaxation. If it isn't think of ways you can make changes.
- Sandra's Self-Care - I purchased a new eco-bed for my bedroom and spent time really thinking about positioning it in the most healthful place in my room; dressing it with the softest organic bedding and supplying it with really good pillows. I don't have a television or computer in my room. I have my favorite painting (My version of 'The Kiss') in view as the last thing my eyes see and the first when they open in the morning (sans alarm clock). I keep books by my nightstand that encourage mindfulness, relaxation and good health. I use aromatherapy oils like organic French Lavender or Tranquility to encourage good sleep.
- Good Rhythms - Morning/Evening, In breath/ Out breath, Days, Weeks, Months, Years ... All of these many natural rhythms we can lose touch with. Instead, we may have replaced them with school schedules, work schedules, family schedules, etc.. Schedules that do not always work with our what our body or mind may need. Schedules that keep us rushing through life as if we are afraid to rest.
- Sandra's Self-Care - Learning to say 'No'. Spending more time checking in with myself. Starting my day with my journal and ending it with a mental list of all that I am grateful for instead of what I didn't do or still need to do or may never do. Yoga, yoga, yoga! Stretching and breathing and mindfulness all rolled into one during yoga. I love the Wii "My Fitness Coach" program which I can do right at home.
- Good Deeds - When we take care of those around us, I truly feel we take care of ourselves. This can be as simple as making someone cup of tea to writing a simple note of encouragement to someone who may be struggling.
- Sandra's Self-Care - Listening more and talking less. Learning to laugh more at both myself and that which brings other joy. Offering only that which I truly have to give.
This new year may we take all the wisdom, courage and hard-work we have gained through the past years and apply them to the present.
