VENICE & ENGLEWOOD: YMCA Benefits from Kiwanis' Mission to Change the World One Child and One Community at a Time |
Pictured left to right: Dale Carson, Kiwanis Club; Ken Modzelewski, YMCA CEO; Julia Steele, YMCA Development Director, and children from the YMCA Preschool.
(Venice, FL, June 25, 2008) - Seeing truly is believing. Just ask Dale Carson and Tom Stephan of the Venice Kiwanis Club, who recently presented Ken Modzelewski, CEO of the South County Family YMCA with a check for $1,800 in support of youth programming. After touring the newly renovated YMCA Youth Activity Center, which used to be the old fitness center, they saw firsthand the positive impact the Venice YMCA has on area youth. "I was so impressed by the numbers of kids running around doing so many really great activities. Swimming, rock climbing, dancing, you name it," quipped Tom. "I knew the Y had summer camps for kids, but until we took the tour, we really had no idea just how much the YMCA has to offer these kids." And thanks to the generosity of the Venice Kiwanis Club, any child in the community can participate, regardless of their ability to pay. The Venice Kiwanis Club is an organization of service and community-minded individuals who volunteer their time in support of children and young adults in our community and around the world. Kiwanis also plays a special role in developing future generations of leaders by sponsoring a K-Kids clubs at elementary school level, Builders Clubs in middle school, Key Clubs in high school, and Circle K clubs at the collegiate level. All of these Kiwanis youth programs teach community service and leadership skills to young people. To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Venice, call Tom Stephan at 493-2345. Club meets Wednesdays at noon at the Holiday House in Venice. |

| VENICE: YMCA Student Wellness Initiative |
Did you know that over 19% of Sarasota County youth between the ages of 6 and 11 is overweight or obese? This number has more than tripled in the last 30 years and it is continuing to grow. Despite state-mandated physical activity in schools, healthier vending machine options and even the birth of "active" videos gaming devices, our children are getting more and more unhealthy. And unhealthy kids become unhealthy adults, suffering from serious, often life-threatening medical conditions at younger and younger ages. This may be the first generation that does not out-live their parents. The South County YMCA's Student Wellness Initiative was created to address this growing crisis. Our philosophy is that the obesity epidemic has many sources and it will take a multi-pronged approach to affect change in individuals, families and communities. In our 30 years in the Venice community, the SCF YMCA has build solid relationships with our local schools and gained the trust of the Sarasota and Charlotte County School Boards. Because of these good relationships, we are able to coordinate efforts and partner with local schools to provide wellness education and physical activity classes to students during their school day. Thanks to a generous grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, the YMCA-presented classes will greatly increase the amount of wellness/nutrition information and physical activity students receive daily without the schools incurring any additional costs.
