Nutrition Tip #5:
Healthy Hydration in the Hot Summer
No doubt about it- summer in Florida means heat and humidity, and this time of year nothing sounds better than an ice cold refreshing beverage to quench your thirst. Although drinking plenty of fluids is important year-round, the summer months usually have us yearning for more, which is a good thing because most of us probably need it.

More importantly, our client track record is strong and our culture emphasizes both high-touch service and unquestioned integrity.

VENICE & ENGLEWOOD: Student Wellness Initiative |
Did you know that over 19% of Sarasota County youth between the ages of 6 and 11 is overweight or obese? This number has more than tripled in the last 30 years and it is continuing to grow. Despite state-mandated physical activity in schools, healthier vending machine options and even the birth of "active" video gaming devices, our children are getting more and more unhealthy. And unhealthy kids become unhealthy adults, suffering from serious, often life-threatening medical conditions at younger and younger ages. This may be the first generation that does not out-live their parents.
The South County YMCA's Student Wellness Initiative was created to address this growing crisis. Our philosophy is that the obesity epidemic has many sources and it will take a multi-pronged approach to affect change in individuals, families and communities.
In our 30 years in the Venice community, the South County Family YMCA has built solid relationships with our local schools and gained the trust of the Sarasota and Charlotte County School Boards. Because of these good relationships, we are able to coordinate efforts and partner with local schools to provide wellness education and physical activity classes to students during their school day. Thanks to a generous grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, the YMCA- presented classes will greatly increase the amount of wellness/nutrition information and physical activity students receive daily without the schools incurring any additional costs.

YMCA Preschool Graduation
The Venice YMCA held their preschool graduation on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Venice Assembly of God Church with 50 graduates. The program consisted of a video presentation of the graduates through the years, songs performed by the graduates and a special hello to one of our moms who was watching on the web in Iraq. The evening was wrapped up with cake, cookies and punch.
The South County Family YMCA would like to extend a special thank you to Gil Cuadro and the Venice Assembly of God Church for going above and beyond their duties to help execute the preschool graduation and for allowing the YMCA to use their beautiful facilities for the graduation.
THANK YOU! |

Attention: Clare Riggs May 14, 2008
My twin boys,Alex and Austin, attended your before and after school program for the first time this school year. I am very pleased with how Christy works with all of the kids on their homework.
My son Austin is in the ESE program at school and was held back last year. I just recently found out that Austin is not only going into the 5th grade next school year, but will be in a regular 5th grade class and will be on school patrol.
I am so proud of Austin because he has matured so much this past year and am so very thankful that Christy has been there to help Austin after school with his homework and do give her some credit in Austin's great progress this year.
Sincerely,
YMCA School-Age Mom | |
