ENGLEWOOD: Tropical Nights 2008 "Jamaican It Fun" Dinner & Auction Fundraiser |

The Englewood YMCA's 13th Annual "Jamaican It Fun" Tropical Nights Dinner & Auction Fundraiser was held Saturday, April 26, 2008 on the beautiful beach at Palm Island Resort. We are absolutely delighted to tell you that this year's event raised $115,000 to benefit our YMCA Children & Family Scholarship Fund which is dedicated to providing scholarships and expanding programming services for disadvantaged children and families in our community. Last year, the South County Family YMCA provided more than $500,000 in scholarship assistance, program subsidies, and free services to local families and organizations.
On behalf of the Englewood YMCA, we would like to thank everyone who attended and helped our YMCA to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. |

On behalf of the South County Family YMCA, thank you Venice Regional Medical Center and the Bon Secours Community Grant Fund for awarding us a $30,000 grant for our new Student Wellness Initiative.
The Student Wellness Initiative targets children in our schools, in an effort to increase their fitness levels, decrease childhood obesity, educate them on good nutrition and ways to sustain a healthy lifestyle now, and for the rest of their lives.

VENICE: May Wellness Update |

· New! Intro to Spinning Class! Have you wanted to try a spinning class but felt a little bit intimidated? Now is your chance to learn all about spinning in a comfortable "beginners only" class just for you! Friday evenings at 6:00pm, Instructor: Ed Rohan. FREE to members, non-members may pay a class drop in fee.
· Next Basic Training Boot Camp Scheduled! Serious fitness, serious results! This class will help you improve your endurance, strength and agility. All ages and levels of fitness welcome. A healthier, leaner, stronger you is just around the corner! 6 Weeks Starting May 5th-June 13th. 5:30-6:30 AM, Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Studio B and outside. There will also be an evening session 5:30-6:30 PM on the same Days. Members: $49.00, Non-members: $69.00. Register at the front desk.
· Try a Tri! A Triathlon Training Program for beginners. If you've ever thought about doing a sprint triathlon (1/4 mile swim, 8-10 mile bike, 5K run), but were afraid to try or didn't know how to train for it, then this program is for you! You will enjoy the support and camaraderie of working out with a group all going for the same goal! You will learn how to improve your swimming skills, fix a flat on your bike, run more efficiently and what to do in a transition. Includes a weekly training schedule and optional week day early morning swim practices. Saturdays starting June 14th to August 31st culminating in doing the Venice Triathlon on August 31st. $99.00 members, 125.00 non-members. Registrations now available at the front desk!
· Nutritional Education Sessions!Need help with how to eat healthier?
Need a more affordable way to get some nutrition education? Here is your answer! Nutritional Education Sessions with Terri!!! Terri is a nurse and fitness instructor with an extensive nutrition background and she works closely with our staff R.D. She will help you create an eating plan that fits your needs and your lifestyle. Nutritional Consulting Fees: 1 session $40.00, 5 sessions $190.00, 10 sessions $360.00, Youth Rate (12-18 yrs.): $35.00. Contact Terri at the YMCA at 941-321-8176 to schedule your individual nutrition sessions.
· May Wellness Lecture Series: Tuesday, May 6th at 6:00pm-7:00pm in classroom B, "Dining Out and Portion Control" will be presented by our Registered Dietician, Megan Witt. Tuesday, May 13th at 6:00pm-7:00pm in classroom B, "Supplements" will be presented by our Registered Dietician, Megan Witt. Free. Members and guests invited.
· Introduction to Fly Fishing!: A six part course designed as an introduction to the basics of fly fishing and the principles of resource conservation. All Equipment Provided. New group May 19th at 10:00am. Instructor: Mark Stevens -Certified Fly Casting Instructor (Member/Federation of Fly Fishers).
Class Size: 6 Students. Cost: $25.00. Register at the Venice YMCA.
· YMCA "KEEP MOVING" Program: "Keep Moving" is an education program showing adults with osteoarthritis how to use simple exercises and a healthy diet to help reduce arthritis pain. Being active is one of the best things you can do for OA! We still have vouchers available for members to receive a free pedometer, a free exercise DVD and a free trial of TYLENOL Arthritis Pain, simply by filling out the form and mailing it (no postage required!)
· Pre-teen Fitness classes meet Wednesday evenings at 6:15-7:00 pm for 4 weeks each month. The next session starts May 7-May 28. Pre-teen ages 11 and 12 will have fun learning proper form and a great new fitness routine safe for their age group using the Bosu, stability balls, hand weights and more. They will also learn how to properly use the cardio machines as well as proper wellness center etiquette. Once they've completed the 4 weeks, they will take a test to show what they've learned and receive their certification to use the Wellness Center with a parent. $25.00 for members only.
· National Older Adults Month! Active Older Adults Challenge Games. Teams of 6 each. One week challenge starting May 26th. Pick your team mates and utilize their best talents to challenge other teams in Pool, Euchre, racquetball, checkers, walking, trivia and swimming. For bonus points, every team member needs to try something active at the Y they've never tried before. Just $10.00 per team member to participate. The winning team will get a traveling trophy at an awards breakfast to defend next year! Sign your team up at the front desk starting May 5th.
· Group Circuit Training-Circuit Express! Do you need more accountability and to have someone push you beyond what you would normally do on your own? Then this class is for you! It is a small group (4-8) doing circuit style training for strength and cardio using the free motion and various cardio stations in training intervals. Led by certified personal trainer Lucia Elsadek. Members only. $10.00 per class, 10 classes for $85.00 or 20 classes for $170.00. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:45-2:45 pm. Register at front desk. First come, first serve according to spots available.
· Computerized Foot Scans will be set up in the front lobby on Tuesday, May 13th from 9:00 to noon for members to detect spinal/pelvic stabilization. Get free bi-lateral scans of your feet and get a read out of potential problem areas. If you struggle with Plantar Fasciitis, want a read out on how you are transferring weight, or have noticed pain in your pelvis, this may be very helpful! Presented by Dr. Erene M. Romanski, DC of Twin Palms Chiropractic Health Center, Inc.

Lakeland , FL played host to the 2008 AAU State gymnastics championships April 26th & 27th. Brittany Morgan, competing level 7, led the Venice YMCA Goldstar team with 3 first places finishes. Morgan placed 1st on beam (8.80), 1st on floor (9.225) and 1st all-around (35.40). Morgan is a sophomore at Pineview high school and also assists as a gymnastics instructor at the YMCA. Other Level 7 team members competing include: Carissa Davis, 2nd on beam (8.80), 2nd on floor (9.125) and all-around of (34.375), Olivia Kinney, 2nd on Vault (8.70) and 2nd on Floor (9.00) and all-around of (34.25), and Alyssa Freeman with an All-Around of (33.40). The level 7 gymnasts are coached by Dinko Dinev, Cherie Chambers and Tasha Scott.

The course on beautiful Englewood Beach takes you north up Gulf Boulevard to County Line and back. Award ceremony following the race at Gulf View Grill with complimentary breakfast for participants and guests!

VENICE: Girls On The Run - 5K Fun Run |
Girls On The Run- 5K Fun Run!
The YMCA Girls on the Run program held a non-competive 5K race event on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Caspersen's Park and the Venetian Waterway Path. Thirty girls from the Venice & Englewood YMCA branches participated. This race was a culmination of a 12-week program that focused on building self esteem, self respect, confidence and life long healthy habits in girls in 3rd through 5th grade. The next 12 week session will be starting September 1, 2008. The Girls on the Run summer camp consists of 4 week mini sessions starting June 2nd and July 7th.
