Trans Fats

When food companies want to extend the shelf-life of processed food they take liquid vegetable oil and hydrogenate it (pump it full of hydrogen). This makes the oil solid at room temperature and unlikely to go "bad". The resulting synthesized fat, called trans fat, is different than the natural fats found in food. |

Pre-teen Fitness! Join us for this fun kid friendly cardiovascular and strength training program for pre-teens ages 11 & 12. You too can workout with Mom or Dad if you take this course and pass the two quizzes with the help of one our personal coaches.
Free BOSU Clinics! Have you ever seen that weird half ball with a base thing in the gym and wondered how in the world could you add that to your workout? Don't be intimidated- embracing the BOSU will dramatically enhance your results. We give free clinics every Saturday from 11-12. Watch a short video and demonstration followed by a trial of your own on the ball!
Girls On The Run- Coming to girls ages 8-12 this Fall! This is a 12 week program in which we build character through social, emotional and physical activities while training for a 5K run! Our Fall session starts August 27 and ends in the 5K run in November. Call Eva Scherer for more details. |

| Girls on the Run is an after school Program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. During a 12-week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, contented and self-confident young women. This program will be held at the Englewood Family YMCA Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fees are $69 for members, $89 for non-members. VENICE: August Wellness Updates |
|
· Pre-teen Fitness classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:15-7:00 pm for 4 weeks each month. Pre-teen ages 11 and 12 will have fun learning proper form and a great new fitness routine safe for that age group using the Bosu, stability balls, hand weights and more. They will also learn how to properly use the cardio machines as well as proper wellness center etiquette. Once they've completed the 4 weeks, they will take a test to show what they've learned and receive their certification to use the Wellness Center with a parent. Each new session will begin the first Monday of each month. $35.00 for members only. The next session starts August 7th.
· The Girls on the Run 12 week program starts August 27th and culminates in a 5K fun run and celebration in November. Girls on the Run uses running to help prepare girls in 3rd through 5th grade for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The program is offered after school 2 days a week for one hour sessions at Garden Elementary and the YMCA's in Venice and Englewood. Two more locations and days are yet to be determined. | The Warren Loranger Family YMCA will present a new program beginning July 28, 2007 called "Family Fun Time." The 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month the YMCA will open its doors to all of Englewood's families from 2:30-4:30pm for free. Facilities that will be available include the YMCA swimming pool, gymnasium, game room, and athletic fields.

| The Englewood Branch would like to welcome Clare Riggs as our new School Age Care Director. Clare has been the Director of School Age Care in Venice for several years and will be taking on additional responsibilities by overseeing the program at both of our YMCA branches. Her experience and dedication to the YMCA will further enhance the Englewood program.

If you are looking for a fall sport that will help your child maintain a healthy lifestyle and teach skills that are life long, consider the Sharks Swim Team. Englewood's program is a satellite of the nationally recognized Sarasota Sharks. Coached by Lemon Bay High School coaches Kelly Librizzi and Dawn Hall, the program is designed to meet all levels of competitive swimmers. Practices are from 5:30-6:30pm during the school year and swimmers typically compete once a month. The Sharks have open tryouts and are a year round program. YMCA Fall Soccer Registration has begun in Englewood. Children ages 4-12 have the opportunity to participate in a learning "first team" atmosphere. The program teaches the concepts of good sportmanship and developmental soccer skills in a safe and healthy environment. Teams practice on Tuesday or Thursday evenings and have games on Saturday mornings. Registration for this popular program closes Friday, August 31st. Program fees are $50 for YMCA members and $65 for Non-Members. A late fee of $15 will be required for registrations after August 31st. Contact the YMCA at 941-475-1234 for additional information. |
| VENICE: Venice YMCA gymnasts peak at Nationals |
| For 5 YMCA gymnasts, June 27th - June 30th proved to be a successful gymnastics competition in Tacoma, Washington near the peak of Mount Ranier. The meet was attended by nearly 950 YMCA gymnasts representing over 20 states. Kelsey Stapans, senior division, and Caitlin Elsadek, junior division, started the team off in the level 8 competition with near perfect routines. Elsadek, 12 years old, placed second on uneven bars (9.1) and tied for 3rd on floor exercise (9.425) which resulted in a season-high all-around (35.075). Stapans placed 3rd on balance beam (9.125) and 5th in the All-Around (34.90) which placed her with the top 25 senior gymnasts who advanced to finals.
