Englewood YMCA receives new rock climbing wall!
The Warren Loranger Englewood branch of the South County Family YMCA is excited to announce their most recent addition, a new rock climbing wall!   At this year's Tropical Nights event, the Hinck Family of Englewood announced their incredibly generous lead gift of $10,000, which was then followed by a paddle raise at the event which netted the additional $11,000 needed to purchase the rock wall.    Everyone in Englewood is thrilled about the new rock climbing wall, the coolest new thing happening at the Warren Loranger Englewood YMCA.

YMCA Boot Camp- Yes You Can!

I am a 37 year old woman who has never worked out consistently.  I'm not a runner or an athlete, and while I eat healthy today, making exercise a part of my life has been a huge challenge on my road to being a healthier person.

After almost dying from gastric bypass surgery in 2001, I did loose a lot of weight, almost 100 pounds.  But 6 years later, I've still never incorporated exercise into my life, and the weight has been coming back on.

The South County Family YMCA gives a special thank you to member Mary Chase, one of our Aquatic Exercise participants, who stepped up and led the class when the instructor was called away for a family emergency at the last minute. Thank you for a job well done!

Medically-Based Wellness Programs

According to the CHIP 2006 Community Health Survey over 30% of Sarasota County residents report having arthritis, over 25% report suffering from weight problems, 34% say they have high blood pressure and 31% report high cholesterol.

These health conditions, so prevalent in our community, are all positively affected by diet and activity levels, often to the point where the condition vanishes. However, knowing what to do and having the motivation to stick with it are elusive. The South County Family YMCA has addressed this problem by creating what we call our Medically-Based Programs. Using reputable, nationally known programs as models and under the guidance of a physician's advisory committee, we have hired the most qualified team in the area to design individual rehabilitation and weight loss programs tailored specifically to our members' needs. Our exercise physiologist, registered dietitian and nurse design and supervise the programs insuring sound principles, safety and efficacy.

We have programs for weight loss, arthritis rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes management and prevention, and cancer wellness.

Englewood Kiwanis helps the YMCA teach kids to swim through their "Every Child a Swimmer" Scholarship Program

Where did you learn to swim?  Literally tens of millions of people across the United States would answer "at the YMCA".    Thanks to the generosity of the Kiwanis Club of Englewood-Cape Haze, twenty-five local children will be able to say they learned to swim at the YMCA, too.

For the second year in a row, the Kiwanis Club of Englewood has provided a generous $1,000 grant to the Englewood YMCA Aquatics Department.  Intended to assist low income families, these funds will provide swimming lessons for twenty-five children between the ages of 6-12 yrs old.  The scholarship program provides one lesson per week for four weeks, from July 6-30, and lessons are available either Mondays or Fridays from 3:00 - 3:30 p.m.  Swim lessons are available for YMCA members or non-members, and registration is on a 'first come first serve" basis.
