Additional Prayers & Praises

We are thankful that the fire was not close enough to put us in danger and has, we think, been snuffed out (although the air is still quite smokey - I don't see anymore flames).  That smoke, however, has aggravated our asthma a bit.

Please also be praying with Pastora Daisy (Pastor Luis Alberto's wife) for her father and her brother who are now both undergoing treatments for cancer.

As many of you already know, Beth's grandfather, Bill Absher, passed away on April 4.  Please continue to keep the Absher family in your prayers.

We continue to pray for family members and friends in Colombia who have been endangered or displaced by severe flooding in the area.  We also lift up friends and family in the USA as they recover from the destructive force of tornadoes.

Continue to pray for God's direction at Casa Grande as well as praise Him for the growth of the church and its affect upon the neighborhood.  We also continue to praise God for directing us to the kid's school.  Both of them are very content with the change!

...to get a fire going...

Perhaps you've sung those very words around a campfire a time or two.  Authorities believe it was one such campfire that was not properly put out or a cigarette butt that ignited the massive forest fire pictured above on Monday (May 2).  Because the fire is over a mile high in the Andes, the only way to reach it is on foot, horseback or air, yet it is clearly visible from our bedroom window.  We've seen helicopters filling large buckets from the duck pond at a nearby park in order to help defeat the blaze.  Due to the smoke in the air, some schools were canceled today and all physical education classes and sports activities were suspended on this side of the city.

Clearly, one little spark not only started a massive fire but had a broader affect on the society-at-large.  It is our prayer that our ministry ignites similar fires - ones with far-reaching affects.  We pray that as people come into personal relationships with Jesus Christ, they may also influence their surrounding neighborhoods, cities, countries and world for Christ!

Equiping the workers
Ricardo traveled to Paraguay for his birthday weekend where he taught a seminar on Practical Pastoral Ethics twice.  In just three days, he taught or preached for a total of about 24 hours in two different locations (a distance of about 5 hours between the two).  Over 80 people attended the conferences, many of them youth/young adults.  That fact in itself ignites hope in the future of the church as young leaders begin the training process.  Likewise, Superintendent Ceferino Ramirez' vision for the work in Paraguay is one that will support wild-fire growth in the upcoming years.

(Unfortunately, due to technical problems, we lost all photos of this event.)

Beth also had the privilege of going to Chillan (a city 5 hours south of Santiago) to teach a seminar for Children's Workers.  She was asked to teach about the system that has met with success at Casa Grande in which the children of various ages rotate from class to class each Sunday, similar to how many VBS programs are organized.  Several people have already reported that they are implementing the system at their churches.  Please pray that these Children's Workers will understand the importance of their ministry as they educate and train future community and church leaders!  Also pray that God will call and equip more Children's Workers.  We could definitely use more at Casa Grande!

Fanning the Flames

For the past 2.5 years we have been praying for ways to reach the people living inside the nearby apartment buildings.  Esperanza is a lady who came to our outdoor Christmas celebration...she lives in the closest high-rise building with her elderly mother and 8 year-old son.  All 3 have become faithful members of our church family and may be the inside connection that we need to reach the people.  She left church on Sunday with a handful of invitations to church.  As a resident, she can pass them out to her neighbors, something we can't do!  We pray that God's redeeming and saving fire will be ignited as each neighbor witnesses to other neighbors about what God is doing in their lives.

The Holy Week celebrations were both well attended and very significant for our church Passover Dinnerfamily.  In the week prior to the festivities we celebrated as Margarita accepted Christ at one of the church's women's ministry events.   On Maundy Thursday, we relived the "Last Supper" together, learning from the traditions and symbols of the Passover Meal and applying it to our lives.  Then on Sunday morning, we celebrated Christ's resurrection with a shared breakfast and very participatory but meaningful service!  It was great to see the youth of the church visibly enjoying their participation in both services!  The children and adults also appreciated and learned from the Biblical lessons.

The Alpha for Couples Course continues to ignite meaningful and useful conversations amongst the participants.  One of the wives said that her husband was surprised at first when she started using an endearing name for him, however, it has now become a normal part of their vocabulary.  Their rocky relationship is in a healing process.  Please continue to pray for complete healing in their marriage and pray for healing/enrichment in the other marriages which this course serves.

Juan Andres Sparks of Hope
If you received our printed year-end/New Year's newsletter, you've read about Juan Andres, the young man who washes car windows at a nearby street corner.  We also wrote about him in the FMWM Lenten devotional.  We find ourselves frequently contemplating how to best help and minister to him and his family.  While we contemplate, we have continued to befriend him and help him with occasional bags of groceries, etc.

One day this month, as we approached with a bag of groceries, Juan Andres came bonding toward us, his face illuminated by a wide smile!  He couldn't wait to report that the previous night he had begun training at one of the local fire departments!  What a joy it was to celebrate and pray with him that day!  Now when we stop at his intersection he tells us about his bi-weekly training sessions.  Despite the falling temperatures and the ongoing harsh reality of his situation, it is refreshing to see hope burning in his eyes!

Please keep praying for Juan Andres and the multitudes of others like him who simply need someone to follow Jesus' example, someone to believe in them enough to bring them hope for a brighter future!  Don't wait until you can do something BIG; do something little today...because the little things really do matter!   After all, it only takes a spark to get a fire going!
Upcoming Events
On May 13 & 14 the Reaching the City for Christ Seminar led by Dra. Delia Nüesch-Olver, Dr. Paul Olver, and Ricardo.  Over 50 people have confirmed their attendance at Casa Grande.  Praise and worship for the event will be led by our team at Casa Grande, lunch will be provided by the ladies of La Gran Comision Church and it will all end with a missiological prayer tour of Santiago.

Dra. Delia will also be preaching at Casa Grande on Sunday morning while Dr. Paul is preaching at Comunidad Vida.  We look forward to hosting them both for a few days and ask you to please be in prayer for these events!

Spreading Sparks and Fanning Flames
Your prayer and financial support helps make these ministries to individuals, to congregations, and throughout Latin America possible!  We thank you and pray that just as you help spread Christian sparks throughout Latin America (by supporting this ministry), you are also spreading sparks in your own community!  May the Holy Spirit guide and direct each of us so that those sparks are fanned into eternal flames.
