Greetings!
It is that time of year again. The time when everyone gets together and watches with great interest and anticipation to find out just how far the Wildcats will go...at least that is what happens in Kentucky!
In Chile, where basketball doesn't YET capture the hearts of the natives, March Madness still reigns. March is the month when vacation season ends, school begins and with that the mad rush to buy school supplies and uniforms, etc., obligatory car insurance and circulation fees are paid, church ministries and community activities go into full swing, and life returns to "normal". The Mapuche Indians (Chilean Natives) celebrate New Years on March 21 (the first day of fall) and indeed, March is the beginning of the Chilean Calendar. In Chile, March signifies the transition between Time-Out and Full-Court-Press!
With the rush of activity comes true madness, as many people, in Santiago especially, find themselves spiraling toward depression. It is in this environment that we endeavor to be a light in the darkness, as we share Christ through the ministries of our church and through daily contact with our classmates, neighbors and others whom we meet.

Strengthening the Marital Team
 | |
Waldo & Olga also have lots to share, with 53 years of marital experience.

March 25th saw the beginning of our 2011 Alpha for Couples course. 4 couples participated last week and another is set to join the course tonight.
One of the recruitment benefits of this program is that couples are not asked to share intimate details of their relationship with anyone other than their spouse. We believe this is the reason that 3 of the couples, who are experiencing significant problems in their marriage, decided to come. While this is how the course is designed, God changed the game plan last week!
As we were sharing the lesson, Juan Carlos and Jasmine asked to give an example from their own experience. (This is the couple who we wrote about last month, who just renewed their vows after being separated for several years.) As they shared the challenges they faced, another couple started nodding and then asking questions and then the other couples joined in. We just sat back and prayed as we watched God work through their very open discussion! Please, please, please continue praying for this very important ministry! May God's light shine through the witness of strengthened and healed marriages in Chile! May He also grant us wisdom and a healthy marriage as we continue this important ministry!

Taking a Break in the Andes

All too often we find ourselves so busy with the ministry that we have little opportunity to receive ministry. This month we have made a conscious effort to change that even as we prepare for a busy ministry season in which: we are teaching together, Ricardo will be teaching a course on Pastoral Ethics in the local Chilean institute as well as traveling to various countries to lead seminars on that and Wesleyan Theology, Beth will be traveling to Southern Chilean to lead a course on Practical and Creative Strategies for Teaching Sunday School in addition to the regular activities of the church. This month we benefited from attending a 3 day seminar on "Pastoring Your Child's Heart" led by Dr. Tedd Tripp. (If you are a parent, we recommend reading his book.) In addition, we began a Bible Study with one of our couple friends. During the course of the week we each read 5 chapters of the Bible (we are studying Luke now) and then get together to share what we have learned. The only teacher in this system is the Bible! Likewise, we have built "family time" into our daily routine so that we intentionally share the days experiences, learn from the Bible and play together. And finally, in addition to weekly prayer meetings with the church and monthly planning meetings with the leadership team, we have chosen to begin a day of fasting and worship for that same team one Sunday each month. Please pray for us as we seek regularly seek God's direction through this disciplined training exercise!

We are both players and coaches on the ministry court and your prayers and support are the most important 6th man any team could have!
Thank you and may God richly bless you,

P.S. Perhaps by now it is obvious that we are excited to have our beloved Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA Final Four this year, after a long dry spell! We have enjoyed watching the tournament over the internet and teaching others how to cheer. Ricardo's Colombian family watched the game with us on Sunday night and we have a Chilean couple scheduled to help cheer them toward victory on Saturday night. While it isn't "The Main Thing" it has been fun to have a little taste of home. (And don't worry, we were cheering for your teams too.)

Student Athletes
Thanks for your prayers for Juliana and Jonathan as they began classes at a new school. They both seem to have adjusted well, have very good teachers and are making new friends. Rather than single her out, Juliana's teacher has elected to observe her for a few months before determining if she needs additional "treatment." We are very content with this wise decision and Juliana is doing great so-far! At the advice of Juliana's occupational therapist, we put both kids in swimming lessons - 3 evenings a week at the indoor pool just a block away. They LOVE it and are "swimming" (or at least dog-paddling) without any flotation devices Their first "swim meet" is on Saturday and should be a lot of fun!

Please Pray...
for Bill Absher, Beth's Grandfather. Dad reports that the Hospice Doctor confirmed today that his body is in the final stages of shutting down. Grandaddy has walked with God for many years but this final transition has been difficult for him. Please pray for his comfort and peace. Also pray for Dad, Aunt Barbara and everyone else who is providing his round-the-clock care.
Praise God for His promise of renewal, for those who trust in Him.

Eat to Support CCCG
|
Due to growing attendance we need to expand the sanctuary at Comunidad Cristiana Casa Grande (CCCG). The first step is to hire an engineer to make sure that as we make the changes, the building structure remains strong. Therefore, On April 6 Wilmore Free Methodist Church (in Kentucky) is hosting a fund-raiser to help CCCG cover this expense.
Our friend, Jose Buenrostro from Casa de Jose's will be donating the food for this event and this year he promises an ALL MEXICAN menu! Eat, drink, and join our team!
| | Dinner is on April 6: Contact Wilmore Free Methodist Church for more information. |
