Juliana taking a picture
Serving Latin America
March, 2011

Greetings!

Last month we took a short summer vacation to beautiful southern Chile.  As we raced against becoming a rotten egg to the top of the hill so that we could take another posed picture in front a lovely landscape, I found myself asking, "Which part is the memory: the race or the picture?"

Sure, I enjoy looking at the photo albums that tell some of our lives stories...but the pictures themselves are not my memories.  My memories are what I hold in my heart as I remember the actual experience of spending precious time together.   Anybody can look at a photo album full of beautiful photo opportunities, but a memory is personal!  Besides, many times I have "missed the moment" because I was behind the camera!  For example: once we accidented upon Prince Edward's bodyguards who told us that the prince himself would be arriving in two minutes.  While I was setting up the camera to get the "perfect shot", he arrived and went into the building.  Ricardo has the memory of seeing the prince but I just have a picture of the bottom of his foot as he walked through the door.

The sad thing is that people often treat the Bible as a photo album.  They flip through it from time-to-time to enjoy the snap-shots of other's lives but they don't have the joy of the experience!  This is why our work in Santiago and throughout Latin America is so important!  As Ricardo said at our Church Leadership Team Meeting last week, "Our job is to create the spaces, organize the services/events, have the conversations...in which God can show up and the people can experience Him."  We create the backdrop (and sometimes it serves as a great photo opp) but it is the encounter with Jesus that memories are made of!

It is our prayer that we will keep our focus on making memories this year - for others and also ourselves - and not get caught up in looking for the perfect photo opportunity.  The bible says, "Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the one who takes refuge in him" (Psalm 34:8a).  It is a personal memory worth making!

Thank you so much for making our ministry possible.  Please keep reading to learn more about our activities of the past month.  Most of the pictures below can be clicked on to see more photos of that specific event.

Many blessings,

Creating the Opportunities

We were so thankful that Ricardo's mother and sister were able to visit us in Chile this month.  Their presence gave us the opportunity to participate in meaningful ministry.  Not only did Juliana and Jonathan enjoy getting to know them better but it was also an excellent way for them to be fully immersed in Spanish before starting classes at an all-Spanish speaking school last week!

Casa Grande's Teenage MusiciansThe district-wide worship institute concluded this month.  6 youths from our neighborhood participated and did a great job in the final concert!  It is our hope that as those youth continue to participate in the church's worship team they will experience God personally and He will make a memorable difference in their lives!

The "Celebrating Love" Valentine's Dinner provided another opportunity to experience God for those who participate either as guests or workers.  Juan Carlos y Jasmin Renew VowsJuan Carlos and Jasmin, a neighbor couple who began attending church during the Christmas program, used the opportunity to renew their marital vows.  It was a particularly memorable moment because they had been separated for many years and said, "Now that we are attending church, we felt it important to renew our commitment to one another before God."  Please pray for them as God continues to work in their lives and the life of their 15 year-old son, Carlos.
Memory Making Meeting

The Latin American Leadership Summit was another memorable experience with God.

Latin American Missionary TeamWe returned from the first meeting of Latin American Missionaries in 26 years as changed missionaries.   As we shared life (eating, praying, worshiping, learning, laughing and crying together), we became a united team with a shared vision to reach Latin Americans for Christ!

Thank you so much for your prayers during that week!  It was very evident that the kids, and we ourselves, were in good hands.  On the first day after arrival to Lima, Peru, God lead me to the following verse, "He tends his flock like a shepherd:  He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young" (Isaiah 40:11).  It is a very dear memory by which we were humbled and for which we are thankful!

How 2 Pray for Us
Praise God for his provision...

of a new school for Juliana and Jonathan.  We found a school close to home that promises to provide the support Juliana needs.  Despite long days (classes are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) they both seem to be enjoying it and making new friends.  Please continue to keep them in your prayers!

... of our financial needs.  He also answered our prayers through you.  We recently learned that our budget was fully funded in 2010 - with a little bit of carryover to start 2011!  Thank you!

Pray for our ministry activities this month, that they may be truly memorable in the lives of the people who experience Jesus through them.
